Transcript Hydraulic Dredge " Boston ' Hydraulic Dredge " Boston " began work in Boston Harbor under contract with the Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners for the State of Massachusetts, deepening the harbor and reclaiming the South Boston mud flats. This machine has also performed several contracts for the United States Government at Potomac Flats, Washington, District of Columbia, under contract with Major Charles E. L. B. Davis. On the Potomac Flats contract, this machine, in April, 1894, excavated and put ashore 168,611 cubic yards of material in 601 engine hours, and averaged 285 cubic yards per engine hour. (See Report of Major Charles E. L. B. Davis to the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army, 1894.) This machine is 400 horse-power and about 750 tons displacement. The dredge " Boston " has also executed contracts for deepening the slips and filling piers and land for the following railroad companies at Norfolk, Virginia: Norfolk & Western R. R. Co., The Southern Railway Company, Norfolk & Carolina R. R. Co. As an illustration of the transporting power of moving water, we will state that this dredge picked up and passed through about 80 feet of suction pipe to the pump, from a depth of 32 feet below low water, a solid round cannon ball, 10^2 inches in diameter, weighing 160 pounds. This machine has excavated more than 3,600,000 cubic yards of material. This machine is operated by the New York Dredging Company, World Building, New York. 16
