ORNITHOLOGY GROUP REPORTS ••HARD CORE OF THE HARD CORE FIELD TRIP** Ben Feltner led us on a most interesting, and, to some of us, the most rewarding field trip of our experience; and proved for all time who the hard core of the hard core of the 0. G., 0. N. C. is. I don't think any of the participants will forget that day's experience - especially Katrina Thompson ( who waded in higher than her short shorts) and Mabel Deshayes (in too big waders) who looked as delighted as if a rich uncle had just died and left her a million dollars! Ben Feltner and Dudley Deaver were the other two intrepid waders who were rewarded by seeing nests, eggs, eggs just being pipped, and young of coots, pied-billed grebe, and common gallinule. From the banks of this pond at the levee just off Clinton Road in the Navigation district, we less hardy souls saw least bittern, olivaceous cormorant, ruddy duok, lesser scaup, shoveler and fulvous tree ducks, eared grebe, sora rail, blue-winged teal, black, Forster's and gull-billed tern. In the fields at the side of the pond, were hundreds of red-winged blackbirds evidently nesting. It is of interest that Ben has watched this pond over a number of years; and, for the early years while the pond was polluted, there was no bird life on it.
