""Spoonbill January 1999 Volume 48, No. 1 Barn Owl Woods Preserved by by Kathy Reiser, Mary Van Kerrebrook and Bob Honig Katy Prairie Conservancy The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) has protected Barn Owl Woods with its second major land acquisition. Bam owl woods is a long-time, Katy Prairie landmark for Houston area birdwatchers. The December 1998 acquisition, will be called the Barn Owl Woods Preserve (BOWP) and encompasses 760 acres immediately to the east ofthe Katy Prairie Conservancy's Nelson Farms Preserve. BOWP includes rice fields, pastures, brush and a section of Cypress Creek, one ofthe major waterways on the Katy Prairie. It also includes the stand of pines which came to be known to birdwatchers as Barn Owl Woods. Several species of owls (especially Bam Owls) can reliably be found there. The BOWP acquisition involved the purchase of three contiguous tracts in west Harris County. The acquisition of two of these tracts was made possible by a grant from the North American Wetlands Conservation Council, with a matching grant from the Mills Corporation and grant oversight by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Funding for the third tract was provided by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Houston Siena Club. The Katy Prairie Conservancy now owns approximately 2,000 acres on the Katy Prairie. These protected lands provide habitat and wildlife viewing opportunities very close to Houston. These properties are not currently open to the public. Houston continues to expand westward at a rapid pace, so the Katy Prairie Conservancy's need for continued and increased support remains urgent. To help ensure that the Katy Prairie Conservancy can proceed with the important work of permanently preserving a sustainable portion of the Katy Prairie, please consider becoming a member.
