Rough-legged Hawk - Bill & Bryan Tarbox January 31, 1993
Observed for almost 10 minutes from 100 - 300 yards
with 45X Nikon scope on opposite side of Uarren Ranch Road
from Uarren Lake. At first glance with naked eye, bird
resembled a "TV" due to slight dihedral, overall wing shape
and very dark back and upperwings. A large, slender-winged
buteo, the bird spent long periods soaring in a circling
pattern seldom interrupted with a few soft, deep wing beats.
Underwings had very dark, distinctive carpal patches,
extremely dark wing tips, and the base of primaries very
white creating considerable contrast between these 3 areas.
Underwing coverts were heavily streaked and lacked dark
patagial marks. Secondaries appeared grayish-white with
dark trailing edges. Underparts were dark and streaked with
a light-colored band low on the breast. Head, back and
upperwings were dark gray-brown. Uppertail was very light
at the base turning to light gray and finally dark steel-
gray at the tip. Difficult to see, the undertail appeared
to have a wide, poorly defined dark sub-terminal band.
Upperwings seemed to show a slight trace of white at base of
primaries (possible evidence of a sub-adult bird??).
Solitary Sandpiper - P. D. Hulce January 3, 1993
Small tringa, grey back with numerous small white
spots, white belly. Distinct white eye-ring and lores, legs
grey-green, not yellow. A high 2 note call was heard.
Yellowlegs seen and heard in same area. Distinctive tail,
wide black center crossed by 3 or 4 black bars, dark
underwings, no wing stripe. First found by John LaGrove,
et. al. on Buffalo Bayou CBC at Longham Creek at Horsepen
Creek, north of Clay and west of Addicks-Fairbanks.
Buff-bellied Hummingbird - Lynne Aldrich and Peter
Gottschling January 9, 1993
Seen at shrimp plants in yard, would not go to a
freshly- filled feeder overhead. Hummingbird larger than a
selasphorus. Dull green back and head. Dark green chest
and chin. Dark chestnut tail. The red in the bill was not
in evidence perhaps because it was cloudy. Belly was
"tannish."
Least Flycatcher - P. D. Hulce January 16, 1993
Small "empid" with large head and small bill.
Prominent eye-eye-ring and white wing bars and edging on
tertials. Uhitish throat, gray breast, light yellow
underparts. Many observers. Second winter at this location
in Uest Harris County.
Henslow's Sparrow - P. D. Hulce January 1, 1993
Light olive-green head and nape with rusty-brown
wings. Back rusty-brown striped with black and white narrow
band of fine streaks on buffy breast. Large bill, flat head
and irregularly defined ear patch. Located at Grimes and
Baller-Hockley Road.
Notes were submitted for: House Finch (see Dec. 1992 CH for
details). Purple Martin, Pyrrhuloxia and blue-phased Ross'
Goose.
