February 24: OG WEEKDAY FIELD TRIP TO WEST HARRIS COUNTY. Meet Gail Luckner and Winnie Burkett at the jogging trail parking lot in Bear Creek Park at 8:00 am. From Houston take 1-10 west to Highway 6. Follow Highway 6 north to Clay Road. Turn right on Clay and continue past the golf course to the jogging trail parking lot. Gail Luckner, 328-6236. Monday. March 1: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 PM. at The Kinkaid School's Blaffer Auditorium. (The Kinkaid School is located at the second stop light west of Voss Road on San Felipe. If you are going west on San Felipe, turn left onto school grounds, park and follow signs to meeting.) Identification expert, author and artist Kenn Kaufman will present a program entitled, "Owl in a Day's Work." He will describe how he and Rick Bowers located 11 species of owls in one day. The effort was done for fun, but Kenn's program will include serious information about owls, their habits and habitats. Kenn's credentials are legendary. He began birding as a child and has made birds his life's work. Kenn is associate editor of "American Birds" magazine and serves on the board of directors of the American Birding Association. In addition to the book, Advanced Birding. Kenn is author and illustrator of innumerable bird identification articles. The Kinkaid School has graciously donated the use of its facilities for this special program. A map showing directions to the Kinkaid School is printed on the back of this issue. There will be no Learning Corner preceding this meeting. Saturday, March 6: OG FIELD TRIP TO ATTWATER PRAIRIE CHICKEN REFUGE where we do not expect to find prairie chickens. However, there will be plenty of ducks, raptors and sparrows. Meet our capable leader, Winnie Burkett, at the refuge headquarters at 8:00 am. To reach the refuge from Houston, take 1-10 west to State Highway 36 in Sealy. Go south (left) on 36 about three quarters of a mile to FM 3013. Turn west (right) on 3013 and follow it about 10 miles to the refuge sign. Sunday. March 7: SCOUT WOODS WORK DAY. The Houston Audubon Society needs volunteers at Scout Woods sanctuary in High Island. Those of you with stout hearts and strong backs bring your shovels, saws, pruning shears, machetes and other implements of destruction. Anyone who owns a small chain saw and knows how to use it will be welcome to attack the tallow trees. It would be wise to wear long sleeves and gloves if you are sensitive to poison ivy! Discover the pleasure of working hard with friends. Rain date is March 14. Gretchen Mueller, 668-3572. Thursday. March 11: ONC MEETING. 7:00 pm at the Houston Aboretum, 4501 Woodway. Dick 7.ingu1a will give a program on the northernmost coral reefs, the Flower Garden Banks. Recent studies on coral reproduction at the Flower Gardens suggest that the reefs are among the least impacted by man and most pristine in the world, Dick is a member of the Working Group on the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico. He has been snorkeling and photographing since a trip to Havana, Cuba in 1958 and scuba diving since 1968. He k past president of the Houston Underwater Club. This evening promises a fascinating look at a treasure just a few hours of Houston. Wednesday. March 17: WEEKDAY OG FIELD TRIP TO SAN JACINTO MONUMENT. On thk morning field trip, we'll focus on a little of everything. There should be some lingering waterfowl, raptors and sparrows as well as a chance to see early migrant shorebirds and passerines.
