ELECTION OF OFFICERS Sunday, Apr. 9: Ornithology Group field trip. Notice that this is a Sunday trip. P. D. Hulce will lead an all-day trip to High Island looking for spring migrants. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the picnic area/rest stop in High Island on Hwy 87. For more information call Don and Lee Richardson at 661-1365. Thursday, Apr. 13: Outdoor Nature Club meeting at the Houston Arboretum at 7:30 p.m. Chuck Bauer will present a program on Copper Canyon. MINUTES OF OG MEETING, MAR. 2, 1989 The March program was informative and truly entertaining. Don Richardson brought slides and talked about identification points for some spring migrants and winter regulars other than the spectacular warblers. There was plenty of group participation. Don covered some confusing details about thrushes, vireos and even the blackbirds. Had you been there you would have unmistakable Identification pointers for female Bobolink and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. OG members can certainly be unpredictable. The response to a slide of the European Starling might lead one to think no one read Bob Honig's article in the January Spoonbill. Thank you, Don, for a fun learning program. In other business, Jerry Patrick gave a treasurer's report, detailed copies of which are available to any member on request. This writer briefly reported on the status of the Texas Breeding Bird Atlas Project. There is plenty of work to do, and maps were posted showing work accomplished to date. Ed Rozenburg welcomed visitors and deferred to Peggy Milstead, who reminded members that the March issue of The Spoonbill is the last for those who have not paid dues. Libby Price gave a Spoonbill report and encourages all to send in a story, article or anecdote to share with our birding friends. There were reports on upcoming field trips, the Clearing House and aluminum collection. An update on the road-building controversy at Armand Bayou Nature preserve was shared by Bill Kossack. In new business, Ed Rozenburg requested we make some effort to honor the memory of longtime ONC member and avid birder Norma Oates. It was decided that the OG will plant a tree in her memory at Audubon Woods at High Island along the coast that she so dearly loved. David Dauphin moved that we donate half of the money that we have been saving to publish the revised UTC checklist to the Houston Audubon Society's Smith Oaks Sanctuary Fund. There was discussion; funding for the checklist will once again be underwritten by a donor, and the treasurer reported that the cash is available. The motion was seconded and passed overwhelmingly. A two thousand dollar donation will be made in the name of the OG. Finally, the two beautiful prints owned by the late Paul Jones and donated by his wife, Margaret Jones, were auctioned. The Red-Shouldered Hawk has been hung, lovingly, in my apartment, and the Tundra Peregrine enjoys a new home with Lynne Aldrich. The OG benefited by a total of $210.00. Richard Uzar, Secretary ELECTIONS IN APRIL - NOMINEES CHOSEN The Nominating Committee offers the following nominees for the OG's four elective offices: Richard Uzar for Chairman; John Buckman for Vice-Chairman; Jerry Patrick for Treasurer; and Ronnie Carroll for Secretary. Additional nominations from the floor are welcome, and even encouraged. The election will be held at the April 6 meeting.
