Transcript The Spoonbill A Publication of the Ornithology Group (OG) of the Houston Outdoor Nature Club August 2004 Vol. 52 No. 6 August Meeting Monday, August 2, 2004 7:00 p.m. Bayland Community Center 6400 Bissonnet Program: "Research at Smith Point" by Sumita Prasad Smith Point is known to OG members and other birders in the Houston area as a great place to watch raptors and other migrants in the fall. This locality, on the eastern shore of Galveston Bay in Chambers County, will be the destination of an OG field trip in September. Official counts are recorded from August 15 to November 15. Mississippi kites typically show up in August; Broad-winged hawks, the most numerous migrants, pass over the tower by the hundreds or thousands in late September; and falcons, accipiters, ospreys and eagles, though less abundant, are seen regularly through much of the season. The hawk watch relies upon the efforts of volunteers in addition to the full-time counters. Visitors can practice their identification skills, or just enjoy the spectacle. Sumita Prasad is Avian Monitoring Program Coordinator for the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in Lake Jackson. She coordinates all of GCBO's research projects and efforts, including Smith Point Hawk Watch, Project Prairie Birds, Migration Monitoring, and the Columbia Bottomlands Forest Bird Study Group. Vote on Library: A special agenda item on the regular business meeting (preceding the program) will be a vote by members on the management of the OG-ONC library. See details on page 2. We are sharing two meetings with Houston Audubon this year to bring in well-known birding experts as speakers. Both September and March are months with the 1st Monday and 2nd Wednesday falling in the same week and thus were chosen as good times to share speakers. September 8 we are hosting the Tvetens, and March 9, 2005 Kevin Karlson is coming to Houston for the joint meeting and a field trip. —continued p. 2
