Harch 2-3: COMBINED OG/ONC FIELD TRIP to Rockport to view the Uhooping Cranes. Ted Appell's boat. The Skimmer, will leave from the Sandollar Pavilion (512- 729-9589) Saturday at 12:45 P.M. Participants must pay $20.00 before departure and be ready to board by 12:15 P.M. The Surfside Motel (512-729-2348) has reserved rooms for ONC members and camping spots are available at nearby Goose Island State Park (512-729-2858). On Sunday we will meet Jerry Patrick at 7:30 A.M. in the Sandollar Pavilion parking lot and he will lead the group to coastal "hotspots," including the Guadalupe Delta area, as we bird our way back to Houston. Some may choose to visit the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi (512-881-1300) while in the area. Direct questions to David Bradford at 855-2615. Monday. March 4: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:30 P.M. Harris County Bayland Community Center, (north side of Bissonnet just west of Hillcroft) David Perry, Naturalist and Program Coordinator, Nature Discovery Center/Russ Pitman Park, Bellaire, will present a program on British and European birds. Mr. Perry earned his diploma in ecology and conservation at the University of London in 1987 and served as a member of the Management Committee of the North London Chapter, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and as a lecturer, London Register of Uildlife Experts. Loons and grebes of our area are the topic of Learning Corner at 7:00 P.M. Friday-Sunday. March 22-24: ONC FIELD TRIP to Gunsight Mountain Ranch owned by Dorothy Mattiza, President of the Native Plant Society of Texas. Located near Tarpley in the Texas Hill Country, this ranch will provide opportunities for birders, botanists and photographers. Birders are invited to the property at 8 A.M. Saturday for early birding. At 9 A.M. there will be a conducted tour to see some of the rare plant communities that have survived from the ice age. Trip will include a visit to Big Tooth Maple Canyon and the Hill Country State Natural area. Accommodation is available in Bandera at Riverfront Motel (512) 796-3690 and at Econo-Lodge (512) 796-3093, and camping at Skyline RV Park, two miles west of Bandera on US 16. Please call Irene Leslie at 780-2828 if you plan to go. Horse racing crowds in Bandera make motel reservations mandatory in March. Monday. April 1: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:30 P.M. Harris County Bayland Community Center. H. Douglas Pratt, freelance artist and ornithologist and Staff Research Associate of the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science, will present a program of birds of the South Pacific and Hawaii. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, he received his Ph.D. in zoology from LSU. Having no formal art training. Dr. Pratt considers his illustrative work to be "a hobby that got out of hand." His paintings have appeared in numerous periodicals and the National Geographic Society Field Guide to the Birds of North America. He considers his most important work to be A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific. When not working in his office or studio. Dr. Pratt serves as a lecturer, ornithological consultant and leader of nature tours. His usual destinations are Hawaii and Micronesia, but he has recently branched out to the Uest Indies, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Saturday. April 13: 0NC/OG/C0NCHOL0GY FIELD TRIP TO MATAGORDA ISLAND. This year we will participate in the annual Matagorda Adventure to be sponsored by Texas Parks and Uildlife Dept. (TPWD) for every weekend in April. Reservation forms are available at all OG/ONC/Conchology meetings or through Dorothy Parmesan (622-7139). Boat fare: $15.00 Adults $10 Children must be paid in advance and mailed with your reservation form to TPUD. Recommended motel: Tarpon Inn, Port O'Connor (512) 983-2606. Notify Dorothy if you are coming so she can make arrangements for transportation on Matagorda. NEWS BRIEFS AND YARD REPORTS The nominees for the Ornithology Group 1991-92 officers stianitted by the Nominating Committee are as follows: Bob Honig, Chairman; Vice Chairman, David Bradford; Ed LeBeau, Treasurer; and Christine Bourgeois, Secretary. The February 4, 1991 OG membership meeting was called to order by Chairman Richard Uzar at 7:30 P.M. He began by announcing that this is the fifth season of the Texas Breeding Bird Atlas. Richard encouraged everyone who could participate to do so. For information about participating call Richard at 527-0454. Jerry Patrick, leader of the upcoming field trip to Rockport on March 2nd and 3rd, said on Sunday the group will make a stop at the Guadalupe Delta area on the way back to Houston, a rich birding area of fresh water lakes near the coast.
