Transcript The use of the word "rare" is quite interesting. Only two of Webster's definitions seem applicable to the relative abundance of bird species: 1."Seldom met with or occurring; exceedingly uncommon." 2."Of a relatively small class; as, a rare gem." Now none of these birds are rare in the second sense and only the zone-tailed hawk could be considered rare in the lower Rio Grande valley in the first sense. In fact, most of them are quite common. This use of the word is a mild form of sensationalism apparently designed to gild the lily of the valley. I fear that soon the meaning of the word "rare" will become so diluted that it will go the way of so many of our good superlatives such as tremendous, wonderful, gigantic, fabulous... The sad part of all this is that all of these boo-boos could have been easily avoided by consulting one slim volume, Roger Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds of Texas, commissioned, by the way, by the erstwhile, and oft mourned, Texas Game and Fish Commission.
