Thursday, Feb. 5: Ornithology Group meeting at Bayou Manor, 4141 S. Braeswood at 7:30 PM. The speaker will be Noel Pettingell. Tuesday Feb. 10 Outdoor Nature Club Diana Dale will present Overview of Houston See meeting the program: Environmental Geology Issues". Nattrre Notes for place and time. Saturday, Feb. 14: OG field trip to the Lake Livingstone area and Big Creek Scenic Area. Meet at 8:30 AM at the Trinity River Authority parking lot. Directions: take Hwy 59 north and go past Shepard. Shortly after crossing the Trinity R. take FM 1988 to the left and a few miles further find the Trinity River Authority buildings close to the road on the left. We wiLl bird the lake area first, then Big Creek Scenic Area, then proceed to the OG's Little Thicket Nature Sanctuary, have lunch and bird there. Bring lunch. Saturday-Monday, Feb. 21-23: OG field trip to the Rio Grande Valley has been canceled. FIRST BRAZOS BEND C.B.C The first Brazos Bend Christmas Bird Count was a great success, with 130 species observed. The most noteworthy bird was a Blackburnian Warbler in Brazos Bend State Park. Also seen were American Bittern, Ross1 Goose, Bufflehead, Osprey Bald Eagle, White-tailed Hawk, Crested Caracara, Common Ground-dove, Groove- billed Ani, Short-eared Owl, Hairy Woodpecker, Vermilion Flycatcher, Barn Swallow, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Winter Wren, Gray Catbird, and Chipping and Fox Sparrows. Four additional species were observed during count week, but not on count day: Green-backed Heron, Cinnamon Teal, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Bewick's Wren. This is the start of what should be an exciting count in the coming years. Thanks to Brazos Bend State Park for the use of their Interpretive Center for the morning meeting and count-down in the evening. Bob Honig and Doug Williams NEW HIGH FOR BUFFALO BAYOU C.B.C. The tenth annual Buffalo Bayou Christmas Bird Count, held December 26, 1986, established a new species total of 107, breaking the old record of 106 set in December, 1984. Noteworthy birds oberved in this count, located in west Houston, included Green-backed Heron, Osprey, Black-shouldered Kite, White- tailed Hawk, American Woodcock, Monk Parakeet, Red-headed Woodpecker, Winter and Marsh Wrens, Gray Catbird, Chipping Sparrow and Purple Finch. Thanks to the record high number of participants who made this count so successful, and to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for their sponsorship and use of their facilities.
