Transcript The Spoonbill A Publication of the Ornithology Group Of the Houston Outdoor Nature Club November 2002 Vol. 51 No. 9 December Program CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS: WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THAT DATA? Every winter, around the end of the year, hundreds of people participate in Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) in Texas. While the CBCs are intended to give us a view of long-term trends in bird populations, they have become as much of a sport as a serious endeavor. If you have participated in a CBC, you have probably spent a very long day fighting bad weather, trudging over your assigned territory, and having a late dinner at a noisy restaurant hearing about birds you didn't see. You know that the data from all Christmas counts is collected and sent off somewhere. You even paid $5.00 to make sure it got printed. But do you know how the data is used? Dr. Keith Arnold will discuss how CBCs have served as the basis for a number of scientific studies on the status of species or cohorts of birds, as well as problems encountered in making the best use of the data gathered in these annual efforts. Some of the trends seen in the Texas CBCs over the past 30 years include changes in population numbers, appearances of rarities and impacts of habitat losses. Dr. Arnold has taught at Texas A & M University for over 35 years and is currently a Professor in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences and 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 2 Bayland Community Center 6400 Bissonnet Learning Corner 6:30 p.m. Ron Thacker will present bird identification tips. He founded the Texas Birds Record Committee, the Texas Photo-Record File, Texas Ornithological Archives, and the Texas Breeding Bird Atlas project. He has served as president of both the Texas Ornithological Society and the Southwestern Association of Naturalists. His academic publications include over 75 scientific papers as author or co-author. Dr. Arnold is uniquely qualified to talk to us about the use of CBC data for scientific inquiry. 1
