D. Luckner October 26, 1992 Observed at 9:50 am, at residence in Crosby. The bird was observed intermittently over about a 45-minute period with 10X42 binoculars in very good light from distances of six to thirty feet. A medium-sized hummingbird, larger and darker than a Ruby-throated. Head and upperparts dark, unmarked golden-green; darker on head, wings, and tail; lighter on nape and back. Eye dark.. Bill slightly decurved; red from the base, tip black. Throat and breast bright, iridescent green. Belly pale buff. Flanks appeared pale golden. Undertail coverts pale rufous. Notched tail. Underside of retrices bright rufous, darker at the tips. Vocalization was not heard. Combination of unmarked green upperparts, throat, and breast, buff belly and red-and-black bicolored bill eliminates all other North American hummingbirds. Lawrence's Uarbler - J. Horgan, et al. October 10, 1992 Seen at Boy Scout woods over Purkey's Pond in High Island. Yellow-olive back; bright yellow head and underparts with black eye/ear patch widening to rear and black triangular throat patch. Uhite vent, bluish wings with two white wing bars. Thin, black and pointed bill, dark legs. Photographed and observed as close as 20 feet by all observers. Present for over two hours in good light. Hark Kulstead also submitted documentation for the Lawrence's Uarbler. Swainson's Uarbler - Rob Thacker October 3, 1992 Bird observed on ground, walking about, overturning leaves. Observed within 10 feet using 8X10 binoculars. Long bill, brown crown, grayish underparts, upperparts brown-olive. Black eye. No wingbars. Blackish eyeline. Observed at Smith Oaks near parking area under large live oaks and yaupon bushes. Observed for about 20 minutes good light. Bird did not vocalize. Louisiana Uaterthrush - John Uhittle October 17, 1992 Observed at Smith Oaks in the northwest corner underneath mature oaks walking on moist soil in "stream" bed. It was the size and shape of typical waterthrush. Appeared a typical waterthrush. The only comparative field mark observed was the eye-stripe, which on this bird was quite bright white. The eye stripe broadened behind the eye, terminating "bluntly" with little narrowing prior to termination. The bill appeared relatively long. The identification rests on the shape of the eye stripe. The length of sighting and the relatively low light precluded scrutiny of the other field marks and colors normally used to help identify Louisiana from the Northern Uaterthrush. The observer is confident that the eye stripe was typical of spring Louisiana Uaterthrushes. However, this observer has
