Many enthusiasts included notes which called it tfrhe best sport of the year', 'The birding highlight for the entire 12 months,f This, indeed is gratifying for one of the main objectives of the National Audubon Society in sponsoring Christmas Bird Counts is to stimulate more interest in birds, and through birds, in conservation of national resources." This trip, as announced in the November SPOONBILL, will cover the Sheldon, Lake Houston and Magnolia Gardens areas. Jimmy Iuurray will serve as leader. December 31 - Houston Christmas Bird Count ii This year's Christmas Count will be conducted in the same area as last year, viz., lower portion of San Jacinto Hiver, East narris County, extending north to Crosby, west to Green's Bayou, south to Deer Park, and east to Cedar Bayou, with center of 15-mile circle 1-5/4 miles WN1 of the town or San Jacinto. However, due to the ever-increasing industrialization or this area, as well as increasing competition from other U.S. count localities, next year's census will probably be shifted eastward to the Cove area ($JW Chambers County) or soutjiward to the Freeport area (S Brazoria County) . Both of these localities seem to offer a greater abundance of winter birdlife than the present area, which has been the site of the Houston Count ever since 1959 (except for 1945). Although the National Audubon Society has been publishing the results of the Counts in the Audubon Field Notes, the income from subscribers to the magazine has not been enough to offset the cost of comuiling and publishing the results of the ever-expanding nation-wide census. Consequently, the Field Notes editors have issued the following statement in an effort to solve the problem: "Because of skyrocketing costs and an ever mounting annual deficit, Audubon Field Notes finds it necessary to require every observer to pay an entry fee of fifty cents for each count in which he participates." Those who wish to participate in the Houston Count — an all-day intensive search for birds (species and individuals) within a 15-mile circle — may do so by contacting one of the following persons: aj immy liurray - - Norma Oates - - Noel Perley Leota Stilwell - - Josiephine Wilkin UN 1-8837 iviA '3-6140 4111 Chartres, Apt.
