Transcript The Spoonbill June/July 2000 Volume 49, No's 6 and 7 and August 2000 Volume 49, No. 8 September Meeting Program The September OG meeting is a joint meeting with the Houston Audubon Society on Wednesday Sept. 13,2000, at the Houston Zoo, Brown Education Center in Herman Park. Meeting time is 7:00 PM. Social time begins at 6:30 The program will be presented by Steve Howell on: "The Birds of Chile - Parallels in Latitude" Chile is a narrow strip of land some 2600 miles long, squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. In the Northern Hemisphere this would be equivalent to the coast land from southeastern Alaska to southern Mexico. Steve Howell, author of A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America, will take us on a tour of Chile's spectacular bird life and scenery, comparing and contrasting the avifauna ofthe west coasts of South America and North America. The August OG Meeting The Ornithology Group met on August 7,2000 and David Dauphin presented a program on the identification of shorebirds. David is a master bander. He is also a master birder and a master teacher. Through the use of excellent photographs and his impressive knowledge and background we embarked on a tour ofthe shorebirds ofthe Upper Texas Coast. Everyone who attended went home with a treasure chest full of hints and tips on identifying shorebirds. Thank you David! Announcements The Learning Corner Coordinator position must be filled so the Learning Corner can be presented at future meetings. Please contact David Sarkozi to volunteer. A Clearinghouse Editor is needed. We need a new editor as soon as possible for this very important position. Contact David Sarkozi about this very important position. Aluminum Collection has provided revenue for improving the library, paid for top programs and helped the treasury in many other ways. We need this revenue and we need a chairperson to take on the job. A Spoonbill Editor is needed. Don Richardson is filling in as temporary editor, but other commitments will not allow him to continue in that capacity past the end of 2000. This job is both rewarding and prestigious. Please consider it. David Sarkozi can be reached at (713) 520-5906 or dsarkozi@flash .net. Field Trip David Sarkozi (Leader) David Sarkozi will lead a two part field trip on Saturday, September 23rd; shorebirds in the morning and migrant passerines in the afternoon. This combination provides an opportunity to have a very high count for the day. Meet at Bolivar Flats at 7:30 AM. The group will bird its way up the peninsula to High Island, have lunch at the Boy Scout Woods grandstand (be sure to bring a lunch), and look for passerines in the woods in the afternoon. If you'd like to join the group for the afternoon, be at the grandstand at 1:00 PM. We'll quit in mid to late afternoon. Don't forget your insect repellent! To get to Bolivar Flats, use the ferry from Galveston and cross to the southwestern tip ofthe Bolivar Peninsula. Continue northeast on Highway 87 for about four miles. Turn right on the road to the beach and when at the beach, turn right and drive to the vehicle barrier at the refuge and the "flats".
