Transcript VOLUME XIV, No. 4 August, 1965 * "Opportunities to Explore Bird Life * # » ^ "The field .exploration of bird life today might be # # said to fall into three main channels: life history stu- » « dies, regional studies, and special problems. This is by » * no means a perfect classification but it does outline » _ three important ways by which bird watchers can approach # # the subject. In the first category the emphasis is laid _ * on a single species, its breeding cycle, its migration, » # its winter life, its behavior. In the second, observa- _. t tions are broadened out to include all birds, but the t t center of focus is a single region. In the third, field # _. work is concentrated on some one problem, like the molts * ^.of gulls, or the diseases of songbirds, or the food of » * ' Joseph J. PERIODICAL REVIEW Noel Pettingell has sent us the following two articles? The Houston Chronicle. Tuesday, July 27, 1965, page 20 Section 4. Photograph of the first Purple Martin House being erected in Hedwig Village, An earlier article in the paper reported that the city was paying half the cost of these houses for property owners desiring them. The birds are supposed to eat up to 2,000 mosquitoes per day. Women's Day. August, 1965, pp64-65ff. "How to Build a Bluebird Trail" by John K. Terres (Write-up about the author on page 3 of the same issue). Interesting article discussiag .the.decrease ia bluebird populations from 1957 through 1963 and two practical methods of aiding the bluebirds ia their fight for survival. The first method is by winter feeding the discussion of which even ia- cludes a "recipe". The secoad method is the installation of bluebird houses oh fenceposts along country roads. The author set out 60 houses his first year and saw more than 200 young birds successfully hatched and on their way to the winter feeding grounds. On page 94 of the magazine are plans and a materials list for construction of the houses.
