Robison, editor Vol. XXXIV, No. 2 February, 1985 Co**v»*£ £*&**£* Saturday, March 2, 1985; OG Field Trip to Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, led by Refuge Manager Wayne Shifflet. Meet at 7:00 AM at the Refuge Headquarters. Wayne will take us to see the prairie chickens on their booming grounds in the morning. Then everyone will be on their own to explore the rest of the refuge. Winter attractions at the Refuge are waterfowl, raptors and sparrows. Take Interstate 10 west from Houston to Sealy; go south on Route 36 about 1 mile and turn right on Route 3013; the refuge entrance road will be on the right after 9 or 10 miles. Allow 1 to 1-1/4 hours from Houston. Monday, March 4, 1985; Deadline for announcements, Spoonbill articles, and Clearing House reports Thursday, March 7, 1985: OG Meeting at Bayou Manor Auditorium, 4141 S. Braeswood, 7:30 p.m. Checklist Committee member and birder par excellence Jim Morgan will speak on avian migration. Tuesday, March 12, 1985: ONC meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden Center in Hermann Park - YUKON WILD: THE STORY OF FOUR WOMEN WHO PADDLED 2,000 MILES THROUGH AMERICA'S LAST FRONTIER, a narration and slide presentation by Beth Johnson, leader of the historic 1982 Texas Women's Yukon River Expedition and author of the book by the same name. Ms. Johnson, of Dallas, is active in environmental organizations in Texas and Washington, D.C., and worked with the Alaska Coalition that helped pass legislation that set aside Alaska's wildlands in 1980. All OG members and their guests are invited to attend this unique and interesting program. Wednesday, March Wildlife 13,1985: Piney Woods Society Meeting. "The United States: Wild and Scenic" by Weiner Stebner. 7:30 p.m. at North Harris County College. Saturday, March 30, 1985: OG field trip to Jones State Forest and' Huntsville State Park, led by Gary Clark of the Piney Woods Wildlife Society. Meet at Jones State Forest at 7:30 a.m. Take Interstate 45 North past The Woodlands to Route 1488, then West about 1.5 miles where you will turn left on a dirt road marked with red triangular signs; make the second left from this road and park. After viewing Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Jones State Forest, Gary will take the group to Huntsville State Park and possibly other nearby hot spots. Eight species of woodpeckers as well as Brown-headed Nuthatch and other Piney Woods specialties can be found at Jones State Forest, while Huntsville State Park should attract a number of early spring migrants. Bring lunch and bug spray. After lunch, for ambitious sorts, a foray to Lake Livingston (for water birds) or elsewhere in the area is a possibility. Saturday, April 13, 1985: OG field trip to Galveston Island for spring migration, led by Arch Dillard. Details forthcoming. Saturday, May 4, 1985: Texas Spring coordinated by David Roundup, Matson. Details forthcoming. Friday evening Sunday, May 17-19, 1985; Joint ONC/OG field trip to Pedernales State Park in the Hill Country west of Austin.
