Transcript °( The Spoonbill A Publication of the Ornithology Group Of the Houston Outdoor Nature Club September 2002 Vol. 51 No. 7 October Program Bird Vision Rob Fergus, die Executive Director of Texas Audubon Society, will speak on how and what birds see. Rob Fergus grew up birding in Oregon. After graduating with a B A. in anthropology from Brigham Young University, Rob spent several years birding around the country. He worked as a bird surveyor for die National Forest Service in Montana and as a National Audubon Society intern in Washington, D.C. In July 1995, Rob moved to Austin. Rumors that Rob went birding at Hornsby Bend on his first day in Austin are untrue. (Rob didn't get out to Hornsby Bend until his second day in Austin—he had to go see a Green Violet-Ear in McDade on his first day in town.) After helping establish the Great Texas Birding Classic, Rob banded birds as a MAPS intern at Fort Hood. In 1997, Rob began graduate work at UT- Austin and completed his master's thesis on the birds of Hornsby Bend, where he organized the Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory as a Travis Audubon Society project in 1999. Rob is cur- rently writing a doctoral dissertation on urban bird habitat creation and became the first executive director of Travis Audubon Society in June 2001. 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 7 Inside this issue: About the OG 2 Bayland Community Center Chairman's Message 3-4 6400 Bissonnet OG Schedule Field Trips 3 5 Learning Corner: 6:30 p.m. Birding Basics David Bradford will Clearing House 6-7 continue a two-part program on the basic principles and techniques of birdwatching. Membership Form 8 Rob loves sharing his passion for birds and the outdoors, and he invites everyone to come out and bird with him on one of his monthly Hornsby Bend field trips. When Rob isn't birding, he enjoys... oops, Rob is always birding... but he also enjoys astronomy, paleontology, genealogy, ancient history, salamanders, and playing bird bingo with his kids. Rob lives in Austin (best yard bird—Ringed Kingfisher) with his wife, Denise, daughter Anelisa and son Michael. 1
