MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 6, 1970 by Gladys Galbreath, Secretary
Sarah Gordon, chairman of the Ornithology Group, called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.
at the Downtown Recreation Center, A warm welcome was extended to all, and she introduced
officers and chairmen for the coming season.
Avis Brister, vice-chairman, stated there were 31 members and nine guests who were introduced. They were warmly acknowledged and invited to be one of us. Mr. and Mrs. George
Page joined the group.
Miss Gladys Galbreath, secretary, read minutes of June 6, which were approved.
Miss Kelba Drake, treasurer, read in detail the cash statement with a June 1, 1970, cash
balance of $129.60, receipts of $334,60, disbursements of $113.51, leaving a July 31, 1970,
balance of $221.09. Copy of statement appended hereto. A special gift for the printing of
the checklist was received from each, Mrs. Jerry Baker and Miss Nell Ray. The treasurer
advised that 28 members owe dues, also .nine subscribers,
Mr, and Mrs, David Lefkovits, editors, who were not in attendance, requested that those furnishing information for The Spoonbill mail it to them by the 7th of each month.
Mrs. Marilyn Krog, program chairman, announced that the October speaker will be Dr. John
Tveten, and the December speaker will be Harvey Patten.
Miss Marilyn Craln^ fUeld trip chairman, advised there will be a field trip to Galveston to
study shore birds. Date of same will be announced in The Spoonbill (September 27). .
Miss Johanna Grabbe, publicity chairman, requested anyone having news on bird activities
or other items of interest to be placed in Outdoor Nature Notes to call her two weeks before printing date.
Miss Nell Ray, mailing chairman, who mails The Spoonbill, requested she be advised of any
Mrs. Doris Massingill, bird alert ehairmaw. Requested anyone having rare bird information
to call her and others on "Bird Alert" wiH be advised. Also if interested in being placed
on "Bird Alert" list, dall her, giving name and telephone number.
Miss Gordon asked for announcements.
Mrs. Margaret Anderson advised that Purple Martins were collecting at University Boulevard and Morningside about 7:30 to 8i30 P. M. Quite an interesting sight.
Sarah Gordon advised next meeting of Group is October 1. Be sure to tell Miss Grabbe
of interesting news items so that she can give it publicity.
Melba Drake advised she has Steve Williams Checklists, also a few regular checklists.
She expressed special thanks to Noel Pettingell and Harvey Patten for turning in a supply
Mrs, Marion Taylor brought warm greetings from the Washburns, who now live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Gladys Galbreath announced for Dr. S. Harold Reuter the special Underwater International Film Fes_ival on Saturday, September 26 in Jones Hall. (More details of this will
appear in the Coming Events section.
Old business; About 1500 checklists were sold in March, and we now have about 135. Several
