Seen flying and perched on nest and in direct comparison vith Barn, Tree and both races of Cliff Swallow. Buffy rump; pale underparts vith light buffy throat; pale rufous forehead; bluish-black crown; bluish-black upperparts with distinct whitish streaking on back; square tail. Seen as close as 15 ft. in flight and 30 ft. when perched vith lOx binocs for 30 minutes in excellent light. GREAT KISKADEE Bob Behrstock, May 7 One individual 1 1/2 mi. v. of Hwy 124 (High Is.) on Hwy 87 just behind dunes. Bird vas sitting on barbed vire fence. Observed by 13 people for about 15 secons at 20' distance. Made a U-turn to photograph it and it flew while we were turning around. Noted large size, large black bill, rufous back, wings, tail. Bright yellow below, black and white head stripes. similar Latin American species ruled out by size, bill size, wing and mantle color. HOUSE wren Wesley Cureton, May 13 First detected because of familiar rollicking, rattly song coming from thicket of blackberry briars. Smaller than Carolina vren with shorter straighter beak. Uniformly light gray-brown tail held high. Seen as close as 15 ft. vith and without binoculars. I've heard many house wrens and seen hundreds. Previous late spring record apparently was May 4. Glaucous Gull Jim Morgan, May 6 Very large, robust, all white gull at Bolivar Flats, Galveston County on 6 May 89. Pink legs; very heavy pale pink bill with black tip; "angular", masculine looking head. Bird seen as close as 30 ft. with lOx binocs and at 60-100 ft. in Questar. Photographed by Nikkor 560mm lens.
