UPPER TEXAS COAST CHECKLIST SUPPLEMENT AND UPDATE CTHROUGH DECEMBER, 1988)
This is the ninth in a series of updates to the Upper Texas Coast Checklist since publication of the
Sixth Edition in January, 1980. The UTC Checklist Committee is composed of David Dauphin, Noel Pettingell
and Edward Rozenburg, and they compiled this update. The Committee reviewed sighting reports which met the
1). The sighting occurred during calendar year 1988, within the six-county UTC area. PLEASE NOTE THAT
WALLER COUNTY IS NOT CONSIDERED PART OF THE UTC, AND WALLER COUNTY RECORDS WILL NOT BE USED TO AFFECT THE
CHECKLIST IN ANY WAY.
a). Both habitat and climate in Waller County vary so greatly from the six-county UTC area that they
both highly bias the checklist with abnormal early and late dates, as well as rare-very rare-
b). Many birds are resident in Waller County that do not normally occur on the UTC except as rarities, and vice versa,
c). Data from the six-county UTC area that makes up the Checklist goes back well into the 1800's,
while Waller County records were first reported to the September, 1987 "Clearing House."
d). Literally tens of thousands of records from the six UTC counties have been used to create the
current Checklist, its predecessors, and the soon-to-be-published Seventh Edition, while only a
very few hundred records at most have been published from Waller County,
e). It is no more appropriate to consider the prairies of Waller County to the west as it would be
to consider the pine forests of Montgomery County to the north, or the Big Thicket extension of
Liberty County to the east, no matter how often we may bird there,
f). Finally, A BIRDER'S CHECKLIST OF THE UPPER TEXAS COAST is considered to be the absolute finest,
most exact and most accurate checklist available in North America. This Committee considers its
prime purpose is to maintain those qualities. We urge others to compile a checklist of the
Austin-Colorado-Waller counties area.
2). The sighting has been documented by notes published in The Spoonbill, photograph or specimen.
3). The sighting could potentially modify the current Checklist and the latter's subsequent eight updates.
A unanimous vote of the Committee was required for acceptance. The following sightings were accepted as
