Saturday, Aug. 1: Ornithology Group field trip. The first trip of the season will be to Bolivar Flats. Meet at 7:15 a.m. in the ferry parking lot on the Bolivar Peninsula side. David Dauphin will lead for this half-day trip. Bring insect repellent and a hat for sun protection, as well as lunch and a drink. A BIRDER'S CHECKLIST OF THE UPPER TEXAS COAST IS NOW AT THE PRINTER! by the OG Checklist Committee: David Dauphin, Noel Pettingell & Ed Rozenburg 1. Finally, nine years after the 6th Edition was received from the printer on May 29, 1980, the camera-ready revised UTC Checklist was sent out to await the printing and folding of 10,000 copies by Phillips 66. The total of 445 valid species (27 more than the 6th Edition) for the six-county area exceeds all but six states outside of Texas, as shown in the following table: 1. Calif. 575 Species 156,299 Land Sq. Mi. 2. Arizona 502 ii 113,508 " tf II 3. Florida 475 it 54,153 " It It 4. N. Mex. 458 ii 121,335 " It II 5. Oregon 454 ii 96,184 " II fl 6. State areas source: The World Almanac, 1989. * Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Jefferson counties. It is also interesting to note that over 3/4 (77%) of Texas' total of 579 species have been recorded in only six of the state's 254 counties (262, 017 land square miles). It was decided during the initial meeting of the Checklist Committee on January 12 that a considerable amount of time could be saved in compiling the 7th Edition if size, format and occurrence categories generally followed those of the 6th Edition. The most obvious difference between the two checklists was to be the separate listing of 27 accidental species (I.e. one valid UTC record only) in the 7th Edition, plus three extinct species which were omitted from the 6th Edition (Passenger Pigeon, Caro- linea Parakeet and Ivory-billed Woodpecker). Although the six occurrence categories were retained, the Committee felt that the terminology (continued next page)
