Oct. 1: Ornithology Group meeting at Bayou Manor, 4141 S. Braeswood at 7:30 PM. Mike Austin will present an identification program: "Flycatchers of Texas." Saturday, Oct. 3: Ornithology Group field trip to Hermann Park and the zoo. Meet at 7:00 AM in front of the zoo entrance. We will bird the park, expertly guided by P. D. Hulce, until about 9:00. We should catch some migrants as well as the resident birds—no, not the big white ducks! Then the zoo staff will introduce us to the zoo's birds, many of which are not on public display. N. B. The zoo needs a rough idea of how many are coming, so call Andrew or Rene' Franks (943-7609) by the preceding Saturday, Sept. 26, if you are going. Deadline for Clearing House reports to Art MacKinnon, P.O. Box 9437, Beaumont 77709. Deadline for Spoonbill material. Thursday, Oct. 8: Outdoor Nature Club meeting at the Houston Arboretum. Thome Dr., Houston 77073 (between US59 and US45). PWWS always buys extra seed, so if you have delayed ordering, call Lana Delgado at 874-3448 (w) or 354-6029 (h). A NEW EDITOR FOR THE CLEARING HOUSE Ron Braun has resigned from the position of Clearing House Editor. Ron has meticulously compiled members' sightings each month for over three years, and added some interesting and informative comments and statistics to help clarify the status of individual species when questions arose. His painstaking efforts and willingness to spend time to make the Clearing House an accurate record of reported UTC sightings have been a great contribution to the OG and the area. We owe Ron our thanks for a hard job superbly done! Art MacKinnon will take over as Clearing House Editor. He brings to the job his valuable experience working with the Big Thicket National Park and the Nature Conservancy, and doing his individual research work. The OG is fortunate to have a member with Art's qualifications to serve. Let's support him by recording our sightings and sending them off promptly by the third of the month to Art MacKinnon, P.O. Box 9437, Beaumont Texas 77709; phone 1-409-385-6789. HOUSTON ARBORETUM BIRDING TRIPS Doug Williams and Bob Honig are conducting a series of birding trips for the Houston Arboretum as follows: September 19 to Bolivar Flats, starting at 1:00 PM after the beach cleanup; November 14 to Attwater NWR; and December 12 to Brazos Bend State Park. Enrollment is limited; advance registration is required. Call the Arboretum (681- 8433) or sign up there. Fee per trip: $15 for non- members, $10 for members. Also at the Arboretum, a free program in the "Brown Bag Naturalist Series," (bring your lunch) may be of interest to birders: Pat Marks presenting "Attracting Birds and Butterflies to Your Garden," at 12:15 PM on September 25.
