MARILYN CRANE ATTENDS DEDICATION CEREMONIES On November 4, 1973, Marilyn Crane attended the dedication ceremonies for the Quillin Memorial Wing of the Rod & Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation at the Welder Wildlife Refuge. This houses a lifetime collection of bird eggs of the late Mr. Quillan from San Antonio. These eggs were all collected before DDT was used, so they were not affected by the DDT. Money was donated by the Quillans to house the collection. Mr. Gene Blacklock is the curator of the collection, which shows the eggs in sets as they would be in the'nests - some sets even included cowbird eggs'. The collection includes eggs of all the South Texas birds; Tours are available of the refuge headquarters on Thursday afternoons; for information contact the refuge at Sinton, Texas. UPDATE ON THE NEW CHECKLIST Noel Pettingell reports the latest on the forthcoming 5th Ed. of the U.T.C. Check-list: meeting no. 9 with co-compiler Ben Feltner resulted in a total of 339 main-list species with seasonal occurrence graphs, plus separate listings of 70 accidental and 3 introduced/not established species. Although size and format of the new check-list will be essentially the same as the 1966 edition, there will be a number of important improvements such as 5 degrees of relative frequency (abundant to casual in graph form) more clearly defined than in the previous edition and 8 key numbers indicating ease or difficulty of field identification and finding for all 339 main-list species. We are still searching for a printer and are hopeful that one or more Chamber of Commerces will sponsor publication of the check-list. Copies of the final draft will be circulated among some of the most active and experienced birders in the check-list area prior to the OG meeting on Dec. 6 and a progress report will be made by the compilers during the meeting.
