Fred Collins, director of the Hanna and Arthur Ginzbarg Nature Discover Center in Russ Pitman Park, will present a program on "Spring Migration." Fred will discuss ancient beliefs about migration and theories about the origin of migration. Why do birds migrate and how can they do it? Come find out about trans- gulf migration—its discovery and proof, and how you can observe migration. Pre-meetingLearning Corner at 6:30 p.m. for Peter Gottschling on warbler identification. Pre-meeting Learning Corner at 6:30 p.m.: Karen Beekman on bird vocalizations. Saturday, May 4: OG Field Trip to Atkinson Island. Participants will be ferried to Atkinson Island, located at the north end of Galveston Bay just off the tip of LaPorte, for a half-day of birding with P.D. Hulce. Bring your lunch and appropriate footwear for wet and muddy walking. Meet at 7:30 am at Bayland Park in Baytown (on the Baytown side of LaPorte bridge). Trip will be limited to the first 14 who sign up with Bill Eley (662-0034). It is possible that a second boat can be made available if 28 sign on for the trip. HAS/OG JOINT PRESENTATION The Amazing World of Birds Don and Lillian Stokes Date: Monday, April 29,1996 Location: University of St. Thomas, Jones Hall Auditorium Time: Social at 7:00 p.m. Program begins at 7:30 p.m. For over 20 years Don and Lillian Stokes have been helping North Americans learn about birds and nature. Their popular lectures and columns have earned them a core following in the birding community. They have written 19 books on birds and nature, including The Hummingbird Book, A Guide to Bird Behavior, and The Complete Birdhouse Book. Their latest work is the Stokes Field Guide To Birds, (two vol.) a photographic field guide to the birds of North America. In this program Don and Lillian will share their passion for birds, their knowledge of bird behavior, and the importance of bird conservation. They will sign copies of their books. The Chickadee Nature Store will have many of their books on sale before and after the meeting. To reach Jones Hall Auditorium, take 1-59 north toward downtown. Exit Shepard.
