Transcript VOLUME 42, No. 6 and 7 June/July, 1993 The Spoonbill Published by The Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston COMING EVENTS Monday, August 2: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Harrk County Bayland Community Park located on the north side of Bksonnet just west of Hillcroft. OG member Mike Austin will present a program on birding the Aleutian Islands, which contain some of the most diverse bird life in Alaska. Many of the records of rare, vagrant or accidental species from Asia reported in North America have been observed in the Aleutian Islands. We are excited that Mike k willing to share hk unique perspective as he has so many times before on other subjects. A medical doctor, Mike has been birding since the age of eight and currently has a North American life list of 740+ and k among the top twenty lkters in Texas. Mike runs the North American Rare Bird Alert for the Houston Audubon Society and has presented numerous programs for the OG and Houston Audubon and has published birding articles in "Birding" and "Bird Watcher's Digest" magazines. Thk k not a program to be missed. Learning Corner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Karen Beekman will discuss basic birding took and will review birding optics, the use of audio tapes and birding networks. Saturday, August 28: OG FIELD TRIP TO BOLIVAR FLATS. Winnie Burkett, Vice President/Sanctuaries for Houston Audubon Society, who k conducting a regular census of the shorebird populations at Bolivar Flats, will be the leader for thk half-day trip. To meet Winnie at the Flats at 8:00 a.m., take the Bolivar ferry at 7:30 or earlier, if coming from the Galveston direction. To reach the flats, go north from the ferry landing, on Route 87 to Loop 108. Turn right toward the beach. Turn right again and proceed to the meeting place at the bollards. Call Winnie for additional information. 713/992-5640. Monday, August 30. ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Harrk County Bayland Community Park. Our September meeting will be held one week early, on August 30, due to the Labor Day holiday in September. OG member David Dauphin will present an overview of all North American woodpeckers. David k on the OG UTC Checklkt Committee and k Vice President of the Texas Ornithological Society. Learning Corner will be held at 6:30 pjn. Saturday, September 11: OG FIELD TRIP TO SABINE WOODS. Thk half-day trip to Sabine Woods, Sabine Pass Hktoric Park and possibly Sea Rim State Park will be led by Tony and Phyllk Frank and will be primarily devoted to seeking fall migrants. Meet at 6:45 a.m. at the McDonald's in Winnie, Texas (on north side of I-10). Be prepared for sun, mosquitoes and BIRDS! Call Tony and Phyllk at 713/480-7878 for more information. NOTE ON OCTOBER FIELD TRIPS: The October OG field trips are scheduled for October 2nd to "hawk watch" at Candy Abshire Wildlife Management Area (you should obtain a Texas Parks and Wildlife Conservation Passport ahead of time or carpool with someone who has one) and October 16th to High Island for migrants (maybe a Black- throated Blue Warbler!).
