"The Best Ever" is an apt description for the 1962 Galveston Christmas Count.
More people (17) worked longer hours (g:15 a.m. to 6 p.m.) in more parties (5) to see
more species of birds (138) than have ever been seen on any previous Galveston Count.
And to top it off, all this was accomplished under conditions of high wind, cloudy
weather and often poor visibility! Most of the count participants were surprised to
learn of the high species total after the count. They shouldn't have been. Their
enthusiasm and energy did it.
The count circle included Bolivar Peninsula as far as North Jetty, Galveston
Island as far west as the Golf Course near Termini Road, and most of LaMarque and
Texas City on the mainland. Much of the area was open water and not adequately covered.
Even the center of the circle was in the water: halfway between Pelican Island and the
mainland near Texas City.
Party areas, with party members and exclusive species, were as follows:
Area A: C. B. Gilman, Clinton Snyder, Linda Snyder. The northeast quarter
of the circle, Including Texas City, the dike, and the marshes
adjacent to Texas City and the Galveston-Houston Freeway as far
south as Galveston Causeway. Exclusives: Cattle Egret, Swainson's
Hawk, Virginia Rail, Short-billed Dowiteher, Long-billed Marsh Wren.
Area B: T. Ben Feltner, Doris McHenry, Elric McHenry, Billy C. Pettit,
Gene Pettit. Bolivar Peninsula to North Jetty, parks and
residential areas of Galveston west to 6lst Street. Exclusives:
Yellow-crowned Night Heron, King Rail, Black Skimmer, Inca Dove,
Swift (sp.), Rough-winged Swallow, Field Sparrow.
Area C; Joe Farrell, Noel Pettingell. Beach areas east of 6lst Street,
including East Beach and South Jetty. Exclusives: Snowy Plover,
Area D: Louise Hoffman, Henry Hoffman, David Marrack, Karen Morse, Bancy
Strickling. Galveston Island west of 6lst Street, as far as
Galveston County Club. Exclusives: American Bittern, Gadwall,
Blue-winged Teal, Common Scoter, White-tailed Hawk, Peregrine
Falcon, Common Gallinule, Oystercatcher, Gull-billed Tern, Barn
Owl, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Slate-colored Junco, White-crowned
Area E: Mary Ellen Williams, Steve Williams. LaMarque and marshes of
Highland'Bayou area. Exclusives : Canada Goose, White-fronted
Goose, Red-shouldered Hawk, Pigeon Hawk, Woodcock, White-winged Dove,
Downy Woodpecker, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Solitary
Vireo, Rufous-sided Towhee.
