October 10 Piney Woods Wildlife Society Wednesday Meeting. "Wildlife Rehabilitation and Animal Protection" by Georgia Rosencutter. At North Harris County College Academic Bldg. Rm. A-126 at 7:30 p.m. October 13 October field trip to San Saturday Bernard NWR for fall migrants. Rail buggy a real possibility on this trip (subject to availability). This is a beautiful, sparsely birded refuge. Trip led by Jim Morgan. Meet at refuge maintenance building at 8 AM. From Houston, take Hwy. 288 to Freeport then northwest (right) on Hwy. 36. Proceed through the town of Jones Creek to the prison farm where you turn left (west) on FM 2611. Proceed over bridge over San Bernard River, then approximately 1/2 mile turn left on FM 2912. After approx. 2 miles, turn right on County Road 3 06. Maintenance bldg. will be on your left on this road. October 25 Deadline for Spoonbill Thursday articles and announcements. A SIGNIFICANT FALLOUT AT HIGH ISLAND I by Jim Morgan Over the years, the Labor Day weekend has provided this observer with numerous good birding opportunities. This year was no exception. Early on the morning of September 2, 1984, I drove through a tremendous thunderstorm sitting over Anahuac and High Island. The rain was so intense I had to slow to 3 0 mph in order to safely make my way along FM 198 5 and Highway 124. Upon reaching High Island, the rain was still heavy, and the lack of light combined with the rain made birding almost impossible, so I chose to wait out the rain at the local cafe. An hour passed before the rain intensity diminished and the light improved enough to begin birding the woods. I began in Smith Woods, and while the light rain continued, the birds were reluctant to become active, but the numerous "chip" notes of warblers encouraged me to pursue my search. When the rain stopped, birding immediately improved. Warblers, Red-eyed Vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Empidonax flycatchers were evident in very good numbers. As I expected, Canada Warbler was the dominant species. While enjoying
