Transcript !fc=a From the Newark Sunday News, June 12, i960 OUTDOORS by Roger Barton VOLUME X APRIL N2 24 I9<&2 * 'Why Lawrence's Warbler? * * 'She (Miss Dickinson) showed me a cer- * * tificate from the American Museum of Natural * * History. It stated that in 194l Miss Dick- * * inson gave to the museum a mounted Lawrence's * * warbler that was discovered by her father * * beside the Passaic River in 1874. In other * * words, this was the type specimen of the * * Lawrence's warbler. * * Miss Dickinson explained: "My father * * discovered the bird by the Passaic River * * in 1874. With him at the time was a Mr. * * Harold Herrick, who was connected with the * * museum. Mr. Herrick was in love with the * * daughter of a man named George Lawrence, * * and in order to gain her favor, named the * * hird after her father when he wrote a des- * * cription of it that year. He should have * * named it after my father. * * "However, it was also somewhat fashion- * * able to name birds after women about that * * time. Take Lucy's warbler and Virginia's * * warbler, for instance."
