Transcript Page 3 HOUSTON CHRISTMAS COUNT, December 29, 1957 - (Carl Aiken) For the past several years the birders of the Houston area have manipulated some of the highest Christmas counts in the nation. Our area has been represented in the high percentage of entries for the past decade, but since 1952 we have been declining steadly. This is due to two main circumstances: increased industrialization and restrictions such as have been placed on us by the San Jacinto Ordnance Depot and Lyondell Park. Several areas were studied as new count circles, but none reached the high potential that the Cove area achieved. Not only Is there a great variation of habitat in this locality, but it has been well explored by one of the most prominent birders in Texas, Mr. Arlie K. McKay. However, before the count, all participants not acquainted with their area should do some very thorough exploring and planning. Mr, McKay has agreed to cover part of the circle and guarantees (if it is possible to guarantee birds) at least 85 speeies. The center of the new circle will be located one mile due west of the town of Cedar Bayou, and Includes the San Jacinto Battlegrounds, Highlands Reservoir, Mont Belvieu, Chambers County Park, Cedar Point, La Porte, and Miller Cut-off Road in SE Harris and NW Chambers Counties. State Highway 73, between San Jacinto and Old Rivers (across northern portion of circle), will probably be finished by December 29, enabling faster travel between Houston and count area. Since this is a new area and we don't know it as well as the other, it will take a cooperative effort from every member of our group to make this a successful count. Our new circle (approxomently eight miles from center of previous area) is capable of giving us a new record, if we work for it.
