Transcript VOLUME XII, No. 3 July, 1964 jbsa b—si ******************; * The living force in man has been vastly complicated by the element of self-consciousness. This fruit of the tree of knowledge as I suppose it is, has produced the richness and the splendor of our culture and our civilization, but is has also brought with it uncertainty and malaise. So far from glorifying life, it sometimes seems that man is coming to feel a fascination in extinction. Certainly our race, for whatever motives, is reaching out for the means of its own extermination. Already we have alienated ourselves by our armies oi * * * * * * * * * appliances, our high degree of special-* ization, from our earthly setting-' * from nature, or reality, whatever * you please to call it. And history * tells us that mankind can only at * its peril thus uproot itself. * In these circumstances, in which we * seem to be drifting ever farther from the source of life, what I say is-- here's to the. pursuit of birds'. Here's to the ivory gull in the pale, pitiless glare of his Arctic wilder- - ness. Here's to the winter-dauntless chickadee that tempers the widow's loneliness. Here's to the killdeer with the questing, doubtful notes it sounds at night from the misty sky. Here's to birds and here's to life.
