Transcript s 1 [____ VDLUME XVI, HO. 11 March, 1968 CARDINAL ON A BARREN BRANCH With out-stretched tail and flip of wing This red bird flits on high To find a perch on barren branch, 'Gainst murky, leaden sky. With saucy chirp he turns to me As if he would explain, "The whole world is my very own—• The sky, the trees, the plain." And as I gaze upon him there In scarlet dress so gay— My heart leaps up and I rejoice That I have lived today To see this jaunty Cardinal Atilt on branch in air, Proclaim that he feels joy to swing On leafless branches bare! Ruth VanHekken (A Houston Retired Teacher) 1-19-68 PUBLISHED BY THE ORNITHOLOGY GROUP. OUTDOOR HATURE CLUB. HOUSTON. TEXAS MINUTES OF THE REGULAR OG MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 1. 1968 The February 1, I968 meeting of the Ornithology Group was called to order by Chairman, Dick Miller, at the Downtown Recreation Center. Guests introduced were Professor and Mrs. Jed Ramsey, Mr. and Mrs. David Lefkovitz, and Mr. and Mrs. ALan Wenger. The minutes were approved with a correction in the order of events. The Treasurer's report was given by Sarah Gordon. The Christmas Count was discussed. There were 139 birds listed. Steel were very helpful in giving permission for the counters to go into their property. They should be contacted next year. Marian Washburn, Program Chairman, said that it had been suggested that we have someone from the Fish and Wildlife Service give a program. Pat Ridge asked what the members would think about a pelagic trip. Melba Drake brought up the subject of return postage being guaranteed on the Spoonbill. Different ways of handling the postage problem were discussed. The slate of officers nominated at the last meeting were elected by acclamation. Wally Mebane, Chairman-Elect, said that he had two things to be proud of in addition to being elected Chairman - finding the Acorn Woodpecker and getting the Bradleys to edit the Spoonbill for another year. Louise Hoffman said that a list of people who would be willing to show out-of- towners around had been sent to the Museum of Natural Science and the Public Library. Clayton Gilman announced the Outdoor Nature Club field trip in March to St. Francisville, Louisiana. Louise Hoffman said she, Peggy Smith and Margaret Anderson would redo the call list for the Rare Bird Alert. Professor Jed Ramsey of Beaumont was introduced by Marian Washburn. He gave a very
