Transcript The Volume 44, Supplement March 1995 Spoonbill Published by The Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston 1994 Christmas Count Compilation by Phyllis and Tony Ffrank This supplement to The Spoonbill presents a special compilation of eleven area Christmas counts for which detailed data was submitted. Total number of species reported was available for a twelfth count. The ninety-fifth Christmas count season officially began December 17,1994 and ended January 2,1995. Local counts were conducted through out the season. The locations of the twelve local count circles are shown in Figure 1 on Page 2. In aggregate, these count circles include a diverse range of habitat: from the open water of the gulf, beaches, bays and estuaries, salt and fresh water marshes, grasslands, river bottom lands, woodlands, lakes and rivers, urban areas and industrial lands. Each individual count circle has a varying degree of habitat diversity represented within the count circle. Weather during the count season was generally mild marked by cold front activity that included periodic heavy rainfall. (With careful planning, we managed to select several cold, rainy days for birding during the season and working in our offices on the beautiful, warm days.) Weather preceding the latter half of December was generally mild. A new count at Mad Island reported the most individual species at 205. The perennial local high count at Freeport reported 204 species. The Freeport count had the most observers at 135 - more than twice the number of observers at any other area count. Four other counts had more than 50 observers. Eight out of twelve local counts had an equal or fewer number of species than last year. Two counts reported more than 200 species. Five additional counts reported more than 150 species. And all twelve counts reported more than 100 species. A total of 244 species were reported for the eleven counts for which detailed data were available. Twenty-eight species were found on only one of the eleven counts. And 66 species were observed on all eleven counts. The prize for the most numerous species goes to the Red-winged Blackbird with almost 2.5 million reported. An additional 696,000 birds were reported as blackbird species. Experience would indicate that the flocks include significant numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds. Sadly, European Starling and Brown-headed Cowbird outnumbered Snow Goose - a conclusion heavily influenced by the Mad Island count. The following summary contains some raritie s as well as resident and wintering species. Notes on selected species appear on Page 9. The 95th Christmas count season did not include irruptive species such as nuthatches. For those of you who have not participated in a Christmas count, consider doing so next year. Next year's official season is December 16, 1995 through January 2,1996. Local count dates will be published in The Spoonbill next November.
