Good light, using 9 x 36 binoculars at 20 feet or less. Green back extended down through center of tail. Very little red in tail and that only on outer edges. Corners of tail tipped with white. Flanks rufous-brown, very obvious in comparison with Ruby- Throated which was present at same time. Appeared chunkier or less streamlined than the Ruby Throats. Black-Billed Cuckoo 8/12/89 Bob Honig One seen in Jefferson County at bridge over Groud Bridge Gully on Route 365, approximately 6-7 miles West of Fannet. Bird flew across creek from woods on West side to woods on East side. Observed at 60-150 feet, unaided eye, by Fred Collins t Bob Honig. Shape of bird obviously cuckoo; mourning dove size, slim wings and long slim tail. Upper parts, including wings; uniform sandy brown - no contrasting wing color at all. upper tail matched .back color.. Underparts white. Undeside of tail light with no contrasting pattern. Bird not seen closely enough to determine color of bill or eye ring. Identified as Black Billed Cuckoo because it is only cuckoo to be expected on UTC with no rufous in wings. Total time of observation four - five seconds.
