Transcript our table! (This is the kind of surprise that enhances the enjoyment of birding, right?) We decided to camp at Cottonwood that night, the highlight being our opportunity to observe the owl's behavior without interference from other campers. Later that night I was lulled back to sleep several times by the owl's familiar call which dominated the stillness. The next morning we bade our owl-friend "hasta luego" and headed for Rio Grande Village. Stopping to investigate Cattail Falls, we spotted a Golden Eagle and, on a smaller scale, Yellow Warblers, Curve-billed Thrashers, more Varied Buntings and Pyrrhuloxia. The falls were virtually gushing due to the recent heavy rainfall. There we rested, absorbing sights and sounds, but were surprised at the scarcity of birdlife. After a few photo sessions and birding side trips, we eventually reached Rio Grande Village. Birding this area of the park is always fun and our first sighting was an immature Sora that popped up from a ditch near the parking lot. The next morning we birded the nature trails and campgrounds, finding about 25 species including Willow Flycatchers, Couch's Kingbirds and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers. That evening, much to our delight, the majestic Sierra del Carmens glowed a brilliant pink for a fitting grand finale to a terrific trip. C&M**^ f/04*4£ AUGUST, 1985 The Clearing House Is a monthly record of bird sightings made on the Upper Texas Coast. How to read the CH: LocatIon—(how many)date»observers . Al1 observations affect1ng the species' status on the current UTC Checklist must be accepted by the Checklist Committee. Documentation is a must for consideration by the Committee.
