David is the man with the sparrow identification plan. Please join him and other OG members at 6:30 p.m. January Meeting Speaker TEA Please watch for the next Spoonbill for our speaker and program. submitted by David Sarkozi, OG Field Trip chair The American Ornithologist's Union (AOU) is responsible for the taxonomic naming and sequencing of birds. They have just released the forty- first supplement to the "Checklist Of North American Birds." The 6th edition of that list was published in 1983. This supplement was the seventh since that edition and is the last prior to publishing the 7th. There are numerous changes in common and scientific names, The family, and even the order assignments of some species have changed and moved. Much of the change is the result of DNA-DNA hybridization studies conducted by Sibly and Ablquist in this decade. This supplement was published to preview the vast differences between the 6th and 7th editions of the AOU checklist. You will see these differences in the 7th Edition (1998) of "A Birder's Checklist of the Upper Texas Coast". The changes presented here are not all the changes presented by the AOU, but rather, those changes which affect the Upper Texas Coast. The family Cathartidae (Vultures) is moved to the order Ciconiiformes (Herons and Storks) following the family Ciconiidae (Storks). Masked Duck changes its genus name to Nomonyx and is placed before Ruddy Duck. All the New World Quail are assigned their own family Odontophoridae. cont'd on last page What's inside AOU Changes 1 Time to Re-Up 3 OG News, etc 2-3 Texas Christmas Bird Counts 4-5
