Robison, editor Vol. XXXIII, No. 12 December, 1984 Qcn^l^Si^hZi Thursday OG meeting at Bayou Manor at January 3 7:30 p.m. Ted Eubanks will give a presentation on shore- bird identification. Thursday January 3 Tuesday January 8 Wednesday January 9 Fri-Sat. Jar. 18-19 Deadline for December Clearing House. ONC meeting at 7:30 p.m., the Garden Center of Hermann Park. The guest speaker. Dr. Frank Fisher of Rice University, will discuss the Texas wetlands and wintering bird populations. All members of the OG are encouraged to attend as the program is on a subject of special interest to all birders. Piney Woods Wildlife Society meeting. "Natural History of the Galapagos Islands" by Houston Post columnist Dr. B. C. Robison. 7:30 p.m. at North Harris County College Academic Bldg. Rm. A-126. OG field trip to Welder Wildlife Refuge, Sinton, Texas. Gene Blacklock, Environmental Education Coordinator for the Refuge, will be our guide; Gene also compiles the Christmas Bird Counts for the Welder Refuge and for Rio Corona in Mexico. The size of the field trip is limited to 5_0 people.' To reserve a spot, call Bob Honig at (h)776-8619, (w)757-3709, or Don Richardson (h)661-1365, (w)656-3445. If you reserve a spot and your plans change, please notify Bob or Don as soon as possible so others can take your place(s). We will be expected to arrive as a group in the late evening on Friday Jan. 18. The Rotunda (a circular building 65 feet in diameter) has been reserved for us to stay overnight (Friday night only); bring your sleeping bags. Accommodations are also available at the Colonial Motel in Sinton (512/364-3456; 2 people, 1 bed is $25/night; 2 people, 2 beds is $29/night). For those of you staying at the motel, Don will let you know what time to be at the refuge Saturday. The refuge entrance is on the east side of the Missouri Pacific RR tracks, along U.S. Hwy. 77, approx. 7.4 miles NE of Sinton, or 11 miles SW of Woodsboro. The gates will be locked except for letting our group in (if you are delayed in your arrival at the gate, call 512/364-2643; there will be no admittance after 9p.m. in accordance with refuge policy). To get from Woodsboro from Houston, take US 59S about 110-115 miles to Hwy 175 (just before Victoria); take 175 to US 77 South, then about 40 miles to Woodsboro; the refuge entrance is another 11 miles beyond Woodsboro; Sinton is 7.4 miles past the refuge. We are expected to bring our own food. Water and restrooms are available in the refuge bldgs. NO PETS allowed. On Sat. we will be given a tour of the refuge; also included will be a lecture and slide program. The diversity of vegetation provides outstanding habitats for wildlife: over (continued)
