Slender, straight bill. Linda Snyder ARCTIC LOON: Smaller than Common Loons by a good 1/3. Cap and nape were paler gray than back. Bill much thinner than Common Loon's. Dark cap came down below the eye. No white seen around or over the eye. Not the same bird seen by Linda Snyder. David Dauphin Red-throatedLoon: Small loon. Speckled back. Slender upturned bill. Called. Linda Snyder Red-throated Loon: Smaller and lighter gray than accompanying Common Loons. Back speckled. Bill thin, lower mandible upturned on end. Not the same bird as Linda Snyder's. David Dauphin REU-NECKED GREBE: As large as, or slightly larger, than nearby Laughing Gulls. Sitting high in the water. Head and beak formed triangle. Beak loon-like, yellowish at base, shading to dark gray at tip. A black cap extended from beak, through or slightly above eye, to back of head. White cheek patch contrasted with cap and medium gray of nape. Front of throat light, but darker than cheek patch. Throat long and thicker than Eared or Horned Grebe's. Dark cap shaded to gray on nape and lighter gray on back. In flight, underside was lighter than back, and white wing patches were very noticeable. Feet were far back on belly. Head squared off at back. Ed Rozenberg, John McLemore, Dennis Caputo, David Dauphin MASKED BOOBY: Very large and heavy. Heavy, heavy beak. All white except that all flight feather were black. Face dark at base of bill. Erratic flying and banking low over waves. Gannet was eliminated because this bird had black secondaries. David Dauphin PURPLE GALLINUE: In reedy edge of pond. Coot-sized but not as fat. Bill light brown, not really orange. Body first appeared grackle-purple, but later showed definite greenish-blue sheen. White in tail. Legs not particularly bright. Bruce Halstead saw a Purple Gallinule in this same pond earlier in the month. George Howe, Kirk Bennie LESSER NIGHTHAWK: Kestrel-sized. Long pointed wings with white stripes very near tips. Wings stiff and wingbeat labored. All brown. Sat in line with limb while perched. Flushed several times, but kept circling small grove we were in, never flying above tree tops. Bruce Halstead, Kirk Bennie, Carlos Mendoza, Floyd Nudi BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD: Large female hummer. Broad square tail apparent when perched. Speckled throat. Brassy green back. Anna's eliminated because this bird did not have Anna's stout or husky shape. Also, the tail did not have the very white area which Anna's would. Doyle and Diane Wise WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKE R: Perched in full sunlight 3-5 feet up on elm trunk in open woodland. First thought to be a ladderback. Black-on-tan barring of back contrasted with the plain sand tan color of head, neck, and throat. Ear patches broke this plain look. Sides also had black-on-tan barring. Wings without vertical white patch of yellow-bellied. Otherwise wings had brown mottling or checkering. Rump whitish. Tail blackish-brown. Rich brown cap on head. Throat brownish. Field marks missed were black chest mark and yellow belly patch (belly was against trunk). Male and female yellowbel1ies were present. Female had blackish to grayish mottling on head. neck, and back, and the vertical white wingpatch was clearly visible. The female yellowbelly also had indistinct checkering on wings and dirty-looking breast. Kelly Bryan and Tony Gallucci have seen one previous Williamson's Sap- sucker, also a female. Kelly Bryan, Tony Gallucci, John Osterhout, Carol Pickett, Edward DeMoll WARBLING VIREO: Feeding in llveoak with typical slow vireo movements. Mostly gray. Throat, belly, breast, and flanks light gray. Very faint yellowish wash on undertail coverts. Back and head darker gray. No tail spots, wingbars, or wing stripes. Faint white eyering broken by somewhat darker eyestripe. Lores same color as rest of face. Dark eye. Generally washed out plumage with no prominent markings. Vireo bill. Lack of yellow on throat and lack of gray lores eliminates Philadelphia Vireo. Jim and Linda Hargrove, Jim Haddox, Jim Renfro, Tom Borchers • TROPICAL PARULA: live oa residen with ol bars.
