Transcript ? gPOOJXBILL Published by the Ornithology Group. Outdoor Nature Club Houston, Texas, Libby Price, Editor; Ellen Red, Asst. Editor VOLUME XXXVIII, No. 8 August, 1989 a... (?0*U**g £v6f*Z* Tuesday, Sept. 5: Ornithology Group meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Bayland Park, off Bissonnet just west of Hillcroft. Since the August meeting was canceled because of weather, we will finally get a look at the new UTC Checklist, presented to the membership by Ed Rozenburg, who will field any questions members may wish to ask. NOVICE TIME: At 7:00 p.m., BEFORE the meeting, Don Richardson will hold a 20-minute session for novice birders. Novice time will be held before each meeting henceforth, and will cover such things as identification, behavior, technique, equipment, etc. Bring your National Geographic or other guide to the session. Saturday, Sept. 9 : Ornithology Group field trip. There will be two field trips in September. The first will be to Brazoria NWR. Tom Taroni will lead this trip for fall migrants and hopefully Wood Storks. Meet at the refuge entrance on Hoskins Mound Rd. (CR 227) off FM 523 at 7:30 a.m. The refuge entrance is about 1.7 mi. from the FM 523 turnoff. Bring waterproof boots, insect repellent, a hat for sun protection, lunch and plenty to drink. The field trip will extend to mid-afternoon, and affords a chance to bird a choice area with a leader who really knows the place. For more information call John Buckman at 713-359-4685. Thursday, Sept. 14: Outdoor Nature Club meeting at the Houston Arboretum at 7:30 p.m. Carlos Hernandez will present a program on Costa Rica. Saturday, Sept. 23: TEXAS COASTAL CLEANUP. Meet at Bolivar Flats. Cleanup time is 9:00 a.m. to noon. Bring gloves, sun protection and shovel. For more information contact Coordinators George and Celeste Hinds at 984-1634. Sunday, Sept. 24: Ornithology Group field trip. The second September field trip will be held on Sunday to avoid a conflict with the beach cleanup (see above). Marilyn Crane will lead this expedition for fall migrants to White Memorial Park, Anahuac NWR and High Island. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the park entrance. Take 1-10 east from Houston to the Hankamer exit, Routes 61/562, mile marker 812, and make a right turn at DJ's Convenience Store. The entrance to White Memorial Park is just behind the store. Bring lunch, drinks, insect repellent, a hat for sun protection and passes or money ($2 each) to gain admission to the High Island sanctuaries. Marilyn was one of a group of three, which also included Ellen Red, which recently found a new bird for North America at Attu. While she won't guarantee that for this trip, there should be plenty of birds to look at. The trip will last most of the day. We will make carpooling arrangements as feasible after meeting at the park. Call John Buckman at 713-359-4685 if you need more information. KUTAC'S GUIDE TO TEXAS BIRDS UPDATED Texas Birds, the birder's guide to locating Texas birds, with directions and maps for finding the right spots, has been updated and published in a pocket-sized edition. The author, Ed Kutac, is past president of the Texas Ornithological Society, and Travis Audubon Society, among other honors. New birders especially will want this helpful guide as they seek new species. HUMMER/BIRD CELEBRATION The Rockport-Fulton area will inaugurate their first annual Hummer/Bird Celebration September 9-12. The Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event, and National Audubon will participate. There will be tours, speakers, special events and many hummers at feeders in the area. More information is available on the literature table.
