October Ik (Sunday) FIELD TRIP, High Island. Meet at Bolivar Ferry parking lot (Galveston side) at 9:00 A. M. sharp! Bring picnic lunches. Veterans of past field trips to this area know that it can be quite productive. So come and see for yourself. XX XX* XXXXXXXX-X--X-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXXX FIELD TRIP Freeport, August 12, 1962 reported by Thelma Smith "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun", and so do the hard-core bird watchers of the O.G. At the appointed hour of 9:30, 18 perspiring O.G.'s assembled in the shade of the high bridge to Surfside. But no Steve Williams! Suddenly in a plunge of dust, Dudley Deaver, accompanied by Trevor B. Feltner and Elric McHenry swooshed down upon the group to lead the trip since Steve was grounded by an upcoming seminar. » A Clapper Rail, with one young just out of the downy stage, was seen along Route 332. Overhead Trever spotted a Black Vulture - a bird not usually seen over a salt marsh to our knowledge. We retraced our steps on 332 and took 523 toward Angleton. A right on Jeffer's Road brought a good-sized pond into view. Luckily Dudley was able to get permission for us to approach the pond through the drive and across the pasture of the owner. Here we saw 10 Wood Ibis, Reddish Egret, an estimated 500 immature Little Blue Herons, Semi-palmated Plover alnd 3 Wilson's Phalarope! While we enjoyed all this, one of our quietest and conservative members, Ella Wolfer set up her camera with telephoto lens to try to "shoot" a small bird. However, since her camera was also aimed in the direction of the Dow plant, an elderly man working in the yard suddenly told us we'd have to leave. Maybe we were bird watchers, but for all he knew we could be spies. After all, Ella's camera was aimed at the Dow plant, at least two miles away!
