August 29: 06 HALF-DAY FIELD TRIP TO THE SAN JACINTO MONUMENT AREA. We expect to see good numbers of Uood Storks, migrant shorebirds and some migrant passerines. Our leader is Buddy Hoi I is, employee of Occidental Chemical. Remember Occidental Chemical? It was in one of Occidental's retention ponds that the Barrow's Goldeneye was spotted last December. Meet Buddy at the base of the monument at 8:00 A.H. To reach the monument from Houston, take Highway 225 east from the southeast corner of Loop 610. Continue east on Hwy. 225 to FH 134, go north (left) on FH 134. At park road 1836, turn right into the park. Bring insect repellent and drinks. Direct your questions to David Bradford (855- 2615). PLEASE NOTE THE AUGUST 31st DATE FOR OUR SEPTEMBER ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. THE FIRST MONDAY IN SEPTEMBER IS LABOR DAT, THEREFORE OUR SEPTEMBER MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, AUGUST 31st. Monday. August 31: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:30 P.M. Harris County Bayland Community Center located on the north side of Bissomet just west of Hillcroft. David Risken will present a program on the restoration and management of Galveston Island State Park. Texas Parks and Uildlife is in the process of re-establishing the natural coastal prairie habitat to the park, and David will explain how this effects bird life of the area. David is Director of Natural Resources Programs for Texas Parks and Uildlife, Public Lands Division, and has worked in this area for 20 years. With a keen interest in birds, he serves as managing editor for the state park series of bird checklists, and is a coauthor of A Checklist of Texas Birds. Please note the special date for this, our September program, and hear David talk about the fragile ecosystem of Galveston Island. Arrive at 7:00 P.M. for Learning Corner. Uinnie Burkett will lead a discussion on those "confusing" fall migrants. Thursdav-Sundav. September 17-20: ROC-PORT'S HUMMER/BIRD CELEBRATION. Speakers this year include our own David Bradford, John Tveten, David Dauphin and Ted Eubanks, Jr., as well as Kenn Kaufman and Pete Dunne, among others. There is a full schedule of field trips by bus and by boat. Copies of the brochure about this year's Celebration will be available at the August 31st meeting. For more information you may call the Rockport/Fulton Chamber of Commerce (1-800- 242-0071). Saturday. September 19: SEVENTH ANNUAL TEXAS COASTAL CLEANUP! Meet fellow OG and Houston Audubon members at Bolivar Flats to once again make the Flats safe for birds. Cleanup runs from 9:00 A.M. to Noon. To reach the Flats, take Bolivar ferry from east end of Galveston Island te Bolivar Peninsula. Drive east 3.7 miles on Hwy. 87 to Loop 108. Turn right and drive 0.7 mile to beach. Turn right onto the beach and drive to bollards. Ue'll be there with bags. Bring gloves. Be prepared for muddy areas and mosquitos. Last September 12,000 Beach Buddies collected and recorded 399,140 pounds of debris on 169.45 miles of Texas beaches. If you think it's clean now so why bother-- think again. Since the September cleanup 1,100 plastic buckets--some containing hazardous liquids--have been retrieved from Padre Island National Seashore. The largest percentage of trash is still plastics indicating noncompliance with the 1987 MARPOL Treaty which made it illegal to dump plastic at sea. You can help. Be there) Wednesday. September 23: 06 WEEKDAY FIELD TRIP TO SMITH POINT HAWK COUNT. This first weekday field trip of the season will visit Abshier Wildlife Management Area, site of Smith Point Hawk Count 1992 (SPHC). Trip leaders and SPHC co-compilers, Gail Luckner and Winnie Burkett, will focus on identification of raptors in flight as we watch for accipiters, falcons. Broad-winged Hawks and more. Meet at Abshier Wildlife Management Area at 8:30 A.M. The trip will conclude around 11:30 A.M. Bring water and insect repellent. For more details and directions to Smith Point, call Gail Luckner (328-6236). Saturday. September 26: 06 FIELD TRIP TO SMITH POINT HAWK COUNT. Like the weekday field trip, we will visit Abshier Uildlife Management Area, site of Smith Point Hawk Count 1992. Trip leader and SPHC co-compiler. Gait Luckner, will focus on identification of raptors in flight. Expect accipiters, falcons. Broad-winged Hawks and more. Meet at Abshier Uildlife Management Area at 8:30 A.M.
