Transcript w VOLUME 42, No. 5 May, 1993 The Spoonbill Published by The Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston COMING EVENTS Saturday, June 5: OG FIELD TRIP AND 4TH ANNUAL POTLUCK PICNIC AT BRAZOS BEND STATE PARK Meet the oldtimers and newcomers at our 4th Annual OG End-of-the-Year Potluck Picnic. Meet at the park headquarters at 7:30 a.m. for a half day of enjoying some of our local nesting birds. At noon we will put down our binoculars and pick up forks and knives for lunch at the Elm Lake picnic area. Bring your favorite, easy-to-make-and- serve dish to share with fellow OG members. Be prepared for a great time, hot weather and mosquitoes. To reach Brazos Bend State Park, follow US 59 south past the Brazos River, then follow the signs. For those without the Texas Conservation Pass, the entrance fee k $5.00 per vehicle. Call Dave Bradford if you have questions, 855-2615. Monday, August 2: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Harrk County Bayland Community Park located on the north side of Bksonnet just west of Hillcroft. Speaker and program to be announced in the June/Jury issue of The Spoonbill. Learning Corner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Have a great summer! Monday, August 30: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Hank County Bayland Community Park. Our September meeting will be held one week early, on August 30, because the first Monday in September k a holiday. Program and subject of Learning Corner to be announced at a later date. NEWS BRIEFS ......PLEASE WELCOME NEW OG MEMBERS: Michele Dunham of Sugar Land, Janet Fleckman of Port Arthur, Steve Matherly of Crosby, and Peter P. McLaughlin and Mrs. J. M. Jones, both of Houston „__MINUTES OF MAY 3, 1993 ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. Don Richardson led the Learning Corner, concentrating on the Brazos Bend State Park birding by ear. After Chairman, Bob Honig, conducted a brief business meeting in which he reminded everyone about the June 5 OG picnic at Brazos Bend State Park. He added that after birding in the morning, everyone would meet at the Elm Lake picnic area for a potluck lunch at noon Gail Luckner introduced OG member Marilyn Crane. Marilyn took the group on a birding tour of Australia via slides she took while touring Australia the latter part of October. She and her group observed 416 species on their month long tour. From city parks to steamy jungles, she shared the group's findings. Particularly fascinating as the Mallee Fowl. The male builds a large mound of vegetation and earth in which the female lays her eggs. The male maintains the proper incubation temperature by periodically moving the decomposing material of the mound around the eggs.
