Tuesday, Apr. 8, 1986: Outdoor Nature Club meeting, 7:30 PM, Garden Center, Hermann Park. Francois Picart of Austin will speak on "Truffles in Texas?" Saturday, Apr. 26, 1986: Ornithology Group Field trip to High Island and Cameron Parish, Louisiana, led by Steve Williams and perhaps Gary Clark. Unless there is a major fallout, we will go on from High Island via SH-87 to the Holleman Audubon Refuge and Rutherford beach area east of Johnson Bayou, La. Meet at 7:00 AM at the highway picnic area in High Island. From Houston take 1-10 East, exit at Winnie and head south on SH-124 to High Island. The picnic area is on the right at the north edge of town, marked by a sign. Bring lunch for an all day trip, and $2.00 in case we bird Smith Woods. This trip should be an interesting one, to an area less frequented by Houston birders. Holleman Refuge is an outstanding migrant trap similar to High Island and many spring migrants may be expected. ANOTHER THREATENED WETLAND Ornithology by Jerry Patrick Another habitat and good birding area is about to be lost to man's progress. Wetlands Area 13 on the Spoonbill map of birding areas that lies between the Galveston seawall, the South Jetties and the Coast Guard Reserve and Radar Station at the east end of Galveston is threatened with fill and conversion to a golf course. The Park Board of Galveston has done two things to this end. They have made application to the Corps of Engineers for a permit to dredge a small boat channel to connect the Galveston Ship Channel with the Gulf around the shoreward end of the South Jetties. The board has also requested permission from the Coast Guard to use- that land which it owns between the beach and the seawall as a spoils dump for dredge material. In their request to the Coast Guard the Board also stated that "at some point in time, we hope to build a golf course in this area." It is the old story of one small step at time to achieve an end. It is rumored that the George Mitchell interests are involved; a golf course at this location would make a fine complement to the Hotel Galvez. I do know that the local Reserve Coast Guard unit involved does not want to see this wetland filled and have so stated to the Commander of the Eighth District in New Orleans. However, the Galveston Park Board combined with possible lobby support of real estate interests may be able to apply pressure that the Coast Guard cannot withstand. Is the saving of this area a project the ONC wants to get involved with? Perhaps our organized support would help save this habitat for a while longer for birders to enjoy. |
