Verser October 7,1995 Seen from hawk watch platform. Extremely long narrow wings with distinctive bend at wrist. Long deeply forked tail. Pale head/upperbody otherwise dark overall. Black-billed Cuckoo - B. Behrstock October 8,1995 Approx. 4:50 pm, backside of Smith Oaks close to reservoir, High Island, TX. No clouds, sunny bright, distance to bird ca. 30-40 ft., optics suitable, duration of observation ca. 2 minutes. Six observers. Bird was perched in a tall narrow tree, ca. 20 ft. above the ground, investigating a web worm tent. Flew to a nearby tree, sat with its back to us, changed position again, then evaporated. Below, the bird was clear, just off-white, and a dull mousy-brown above on the crown, mantle, wings, and top of tail (visible after it changed perches twice). The wings showed no hint of rufous in the primaries. Both upper and lower mandibles were all black. The eye was dark. The eye-ring was pale orangy-yellow. The underside on the tail was dirty gray with essentially no pattern. The bird did not vocalize. Page S
