Transcript §POOI\BILL Published by the Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston, Texas. B. C. Robison, editor Volume XXXIII, No. 8 August, 1984 Ce*h*4+C Ev&i+lt September Monday September 6 Thursday September 12 Wednesday September 25 Tuesday September 29 Saturday Deadline for August Clearing House and Outer Circle OG meeting at Bayou Manor at 7:30 PM. B. C. Robison, OG member and Houston Post columnist will present a program on the natural history of the Galapagos Islands. Piney Woods Wildlife Society meeting at North Harris County College, W.W. Thorne Dr., Rm. A-126 7:30 PM. Program: "Wild- flowers" by Dr. Larry Brown. Deadline for Spoonbill articles and announcements. September field trip to Anahuac NWR, High Island and Bolivar led by Bob Behrstock. Last year we had far too many cars on this trip, so this year we will meet in Houston and car pool. Meet at 6:30 AM at the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Research Lab at 5510 South Rice Ave. (not Rice Blvd.): exit West Loop 610 at Fournace, take Fournace one block west (outside the loop) to South Rice, turn right (north), go past Glenmont (1st light), 5510 will be on left just before you get to the Pier 1 store (on right); if you get to the 2nd light (Westpark) and the Southwest Freeway just beyond, you have gone too far. Park in the covered parking on the north(right as you look from Rice Ave) side of the building. October 13 Saturday There will be a guard on duty (so your cars will be safe) who should already have been notified we are coming. From Houston, we will look for fall migrants, travelling to Anahuac NWR for waterfowl and marsh birds, the migrant traps at High Island, and Bolivar Flats for shorebirds (maybe not in that order). If time and inclination permit, other stops (such as White Memorial Park) are available. Anything is possible as on this trip last year a Parasitic Jaeger was seen at Bolivar Flats. Bring lunch and plenty of water. OG field trip to San Bernard NWR led by Jim Morgan. A NEW BIRDING JOURNAL WingTips is a new quarterly journal that is aimed at providing current information on ornithology. Subscription price is $10 for 4 issues. For more information write: WingTips, Box 226, Lansing, NY 14882, (607)533-7642. A free copy is available upon request by OG members. CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTING Each December birders gather across North America for the National Audubon Society's annual bird count. From these counts, vital information is obtained on the population, range and density of birds. Join Elaine Robinson Adams for two of these bird counts as part of the course she will offer through Rice University's Office of Continuing Studies. For more information and a free flyer, call 520-6022.
