It was an ideal day for birding - cool enough for a light jacket but with a bright sun shining above. Our first objective was San Jacinto Battleground Park, and on the first stop in the park several members of the party heard a sound very much like a Woodcock. The ground was soft and spongy and covered with autumn leaves, a very good spot for a Woodcock. We were disappointed in this respect for, as usual, the Woodcock stayed well hidden and none of us was able to locate him. Nevertheless, we were amply repaid by a little Red-breasted Nuthatch who sat up on a top limb and obligingly allowed us to observe him. Our next important stop was in the marshy area just east of the monument where we were fortunate in finding several hundred Avocets as well as the Glossy Ibis, American and Snowy Egrets, Little Blue, Great Blue and Tricolor- ed Herons, Greater Yellow-legs and several Roseate Spoonbills. At this point a flock of Blue and Snow Geese flew over, honking loudly. The reflecting pool produced a few ducks - Baldpate and Lesser Scaup - but the most interesting thing here was the Tree Swallows (a hundred or more) skimming over the pool getting their early morning drink of water. |
