Transcript Strictly for the Bird-ers Bolivar Flats Field Trip! August 26,1995: Pleasant weather, low tide. The Flats were literally covered with birds and leader, Richard Uzar, helped identify the odd and the unusual. It was a rewarding birding experience. True—at the beginning things were a bit disorganized as impatient early arrivers began a staggered start along different routes to Bolivar Flats, but shortly 17 birders banded together and began an in-depth study of the 50 or so shorebird species ultimately observed. It was a marvelous opportunity to make side- by-side, species-to-species comparisons of birds in a variety of unusual plumages. About noon the group moved to the shade of Smith Oaks and lunched at the tables of Birder's Haven. The afternoon was spent at Anahuac for a good day in the field. Highlights: Five very active species of plover and eight species of rather sedentary terns. An Olive-sided Flycatcher obligingly posed at Smith Oaks. The group recorded 91 species for the day. A group "THANK YOU" to Richard Uzar, who patiently shared his time and knowledge with us. Tom Lewis OG Meeting Minutes September 11,1995: Chairman Bob Luckner called the meeting to order and announced the September 28 program sponsored by the OG and Houston Audubon. Due to renovations at Bayland Community Center, we must find an alternative meeting place for October, November and December. Suggestions were solicited. Bob Luckner repeated his appeal for volunteers to fill the vacant positions: Coordinators for the Learning Corner and programs. Bill Eley, our Weekend Field Trip Coordinator, reported the results of his survey on field trips. OG members like good leaders and the chance to see life birds. OG members do not like TOO MANY PEOPLE on trips! Bill announced upcoming field trips and encouraged participation in the OG- sponsored Hawk Watch. Bob Honig reminded everyone of the beach cleanup on Saturday, September 16 at Bolivar Flats. Membership Chair, Mary Dodson, asked all who have not received their ONC yearbook or who are not receiving their newsletter, to contact her at 974-3089. Dick Hickner of Lake Jackson/Freeport announced the April 1996 Migration Festival in Lake Jackson. He also reviewed the proposed Columbia Bottomlands Conservation Partnership, an effort to preserve what little is left of the coastal forests in Brazoria, Fort Bend and Matagorda Counties. He asked for letters in support of the project be sent to Governor George Bush before September 20, when the public comment period ends. Following the business portion of the meeting we were treated to a fascinating presentation on hummingbirds by Nancy Newfield. She described the banding process, record keeping and some of the flowers preferred by hummingbirds. Kate Fine, Secretary Trinidad Update The Houston Audubon Society excursion to Trinidad and Tobago, June 29-July 10,1996, has one opening as we go to press and is starting a waiting list.
