Transcript NEWS BRIEFS ......JRIO GRANDE VALLEY TRIP, FEBRUARY 19-2L 1994, sponsored by OG/ONC and Houston Audubon Society: This three-day trip should produce many of the Valley bird specialties, but will also provide opportunities to learn about many of the unusual plants of the area. Botanical field trips will run concurrently or separately from the birding trips and will be led by noted local botanists, Bobby Duryea and Dr. Larry Brown. Details of the botany trips will be available in December. Birding will begin on Saturday, February 19th. We will meet at the Quality Motel at 1401 South 10th Street in McAllen and leave for Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park at 6:30 a.m. We will then travel to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. People who, cannot join us for early morning birding can join the group at Santa Ana at 1:00 p.m. We will overnight in the McAllen area on Saturday night and we will leave at 6:30 a.m. for the Falcon Dam area. We will begin birding in Salineno to check for Muscovy Ducks, Brown Jays and other good birds. We will then bird in the Falcon Dam State Park and below Falcon Dam to look for such rarities as Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Northern Jacana and Zone-tailed Hawk. After spending another night in McAllen, we will leave for Brownsville at 6:30 a.m. to bird the Texas Sabal Palm Sanctuary and the Brownsville Dump to look for the Mexican Crow, Lesser Black- backed Gull, and other rarities before we depart for Houston at noon. Time permitting, a brief stop at the Sarita Rest Stop may be possible. The birding itinerary is subject to change if any extreme rarities are present during our stay. The Quality MoteL 1401 South 10th Street in McAllen (210-682-8301) will be the headquarters motel. To get the group rate, which includes a full breakfast, of $52.95 for a double room, please state that you are with the OG/ONC/Houston Audubon when you make reservations. Quality Motel will reserve a block of rooms until February 10th, but remember that our trip will occur at a very busy time for Valley motels and it would be wise to make reservations before the last minute. Other places to stay include the Red Carpet Inn at U.S. 83 and Jackson Street on the east side of McAllen (18 miles from Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park) for $26.95 single and $30.95 double (210-787- 5921), Motel 6 (210-687-3700) for $33.99 single and $39.95 double, and LaQuinta Inn, 1100 South 10th Street, (210-687-1101) for $62 single and $74 double per night. People wanting to camp at Bentsen State park should send their reservation by mail with $9.00 for the first night for electric and water hookups or $5.00 for a tent site. Send the reservations as soon as possible after November 21 to insure a spot. The address is Bentsen-Rio Grande State park, P.O. Box 988, Mission, TX 78573 (Phone: 210-585-1107).
