Transcript Chairman's Message As I look back over the last four years as an officer of the Ornithology Group I have mixed emotions. One is a strong feeling of pride in the accomplishments we have made. Our field trip attendance has increased and we have successfully initiated quarterly weekend trips. We have increased both our membership and the attendance at our monthly meetings. I believe, based upon what members have told me, that our programs are both interesting and relevant As an organization that is more than 50 years old we appear to be strong and vital in a time when many organizations struggle to keep moving forward. The second emotion is one of incompleteness. I feel there are a number of things I would like to have accomplished that simply did not get done. In my review of past SPOONBILLS I have learned that the OG was a strong conservationist organization. There was also a great deal of information about bird identification and birding experiences provided to the membership and subscribers to THE SPOONBILL. Today there are many other sources for this information that was not available in the 1950-70's. None- the-less, there is a great amount of knowledge and experience within the membership of the OG that I feel we have not tapped sufficiently. I am thankful for all those who have helped throughout this term of office. The success of this administration is due to the following people: Margret Simmons (Secretary), Patsy Lawrence (Treasurer), Glenn Olsen (Field Trip Coordinator), Mary Pat Haddican (THE SPOONBILL Editor/Publisher), Bill Saulmon (Librarian), David Bradford and Rob Thacker (Learning Comer), Pat Pease (Membership), Mary Dodson (Conservation), Tracy Kleinhans (Refreshments) and David Sarkozi (Past Chairman). In addition to the performance of their duties, they provided valuable suggestions and insights that kept me on the right track as I guided the OG these past several years. Another feeling is frustration. The OG is a volunteer organization and as such only succeeds by the participation of its members. Although the overall participation in OG sponsored events has increased, there is still reluctance on the part of the members to take an active roll in the operation of the group. We have been without at least one elected officer for the last two years and it appears this will be the case for the next year. At the last meeting I asked for volunteers to help staff a booth on Earth Day and out of the 70 some people there, not one person volunteered to support the OG. I know people are busy, we all are. But without members stepping up and helping do what must be done, the organization will slowly wither and die. Finally, I feel grateful for the opportunity to lead the OG these past two years. I have gotten to know a lot of really nice folks. I have met a terrific birders, some famous some not I have improved my own birding skills as I undertook leading field trips and working with birders of all levels of experience. Program and Field Trip Schedule April 7 - Meeting - Kelly Bryan - Davis Mountain Birding 19 - Field Trip - Anahuac/High Island 26-27 - Quarterly Field Trip: Choke Can yon May 5 - Meeting - OG 50th Birthday Party 17 - Field Trip — Quintana/Brazoria Area (No program meetings in June and July) June-July 28-5—Costa Rica Trip August 4,2003—Next program meeting Nomination of Officers The following persons have been nominated for office of the Ornithology Group. Elections will be held during the April meeting. Other nominations from the floor will be accepted at the time of the elections. Chairperson Vice-Chairperson Secretary Treasurer Kathy Fair Michael Williams MsPoteet As can be seen from mis list, there has been no one nominated to be secretary. If you would like to actively participate in your birding organization as secretary, please contact David Sarkozi (david@ sarkozi.com or 713- 520-5906) or Bob Ohmart ( 281- 579-7403). I plan to remain active within the OG and I have several projects in mind to try to accomplish to help strengthen the OG. As Kathy Farr and her administration take on the responsibilities for leading the OG, I hopefully will have time to devote to accomplishing some of the things that didn't get done. I wish the new administration good luck and my hope for each member of the OG is a year of spectacular birding. - Skip Almoney
