Transcript About the Ornithology Group The Ornithology Group (OG) is a member of the Outdoor Nature Club (ONC), a non-profit organization dedicated to greater knowledge about the environment and wildlife of the Upper Texas Coast. The OG is a club of individuals interested in all aspects of birding, including bird identification, listing bird sightings, competing in birding events and preserving bird habitat. Some members study bird behavior, biology, distribution and migration, while others just enjoy watching birds. The organization is designed to accommodate these diverse birding interests. Monthly meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to interact with and learn from experts in local and international birding. Contacts: Chair Treasurer Secretary Clhouse SB Editor M.P. Nomination of Officers: The nominating committee has made the following nominations: Chairperson - Kathy Fan- Vice Chairperson- Michael Williams Treasurer - his Poteet The nominations were opened for additional nominations from the floor and after the nominations were closed, the slate was elected by acclamation. Report on March 23 Board Meeting: Skip announced that there was a meeting on March 23 of the current OG board and nominated incoming officers. This group gathered ideas for programs and field trips for the coming year. If anyone wishes to suggest a particular program, he should contact Michael Williams. Similarly, contact Bill Saulmon with field trip ideas since he has agreed to be Field Trip Coordinator. (There is a deadline of the middle of June so that the planned programs and field trips will be listed in the ONC Yearbook, which is printed in the summer.) This group also discussed the idea of using a group called Executive Services to help examine issues such as the future direction of OG and possibly suggestions on better organization methods. It was decided that the group didn't have enough information to make an informed decision, and Skip agreed to get more information and pass it on to the incoming board by September to investigate further. The joint board also thinks it would be good for OG to have a project or two to work on next year. Some project ideas being considered are adopting a school, an outreach program, assisting with work on the Katy Prairie. Anyone with additional ideas for projects should contact Kathy Fair. A new member raised the issue of whether OG and Audubon serve enough different needs that they should remain separate groups or should consider joining forces. Monthly Field Trips: The April trip will be led by Glenn Olsen to Anahuac/High Island on April 19, meeting at Boy Scout Woods at 8am. The May trip will be May 17 to the Quintana/Brazoria area. Quarterly Field Trip: A joint trip between ONC and OG will be April26-27 to Choke Canyon to be led by Bob Honig. The summer trip to Costa Rica will be June 28- July 5 to be led by David Sarkozi. Earth Day will be April 19,2003 from 10am to 6pm at Rice University focusing on environmental information. ONC and OG will have a combined booth and volunteers are needed to help with the booth. Mary Dodson will have bird skins available to help in educating the public. Minutes continued on p. 5
