Transcript Page 4 the 24th and by V.E. and T.B.F. on the 29th. Other, exceptionally early migrants were an American Redstart at West Blvd. in Houston on the 30th, a Rose-breasted Grosbeak in Galveston the 29th. Blackburnian Warbler at High Island on 24th, and at Kempner on the 27th. Of the waterbirds there were no exceptional pushes. There were, however, three early individuals. Least Tern at Bolivar Flats on the 11th, Least Bittern at South Jetties on the 24th, and Bairds Sandpiper on Galveston on the 25th. The 31st of March was marked by a new Texas and possibly U.S. record for the highest species count by a one-car party for the month of March Stopping only at Sheldon, High Island and the Bolivar Flats the party of Suzanne Winckler and Rose Ann Rowlett of Austin, C. Dean Fisher of Nacadoches, and Victor Emanuel and T. Ben Feltner of Houston tallied 166 species excluding Rock Dove. Highlightsof the day were two Evening Grosbeaks at~Sheldon, a Ruff near High Island, a Cape May Warbler, already mentioned, at High Island and a Western Grebe at the Bolivar Jetties. The setting of the new mark was unique in the rather unusual manner in which it was accomplished. The party arrived at Sheldon, not at the traditional hour before dawn, but at approximately 7:15 A.M. where there was good light and a dawn chorus already in progress, A further eccentricity was an hour delay for breakfast unheard of in big day runs and counts. Despite our rather desultory manner, however, birds began to fall to our list and by the time we reached the Bolivar Flats, the knowledge that we had the record within our grasp drove us to frenzied efforts for Wilson's Plover, Clapper Rail, Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow and Horned Lark. Sunset fell on us as we crossed the Bolivar Ferry, but we were able to find species 165, a White-winged Dove, at the Galveston County Courthouse by the aid of street lights. The final bird, Screech Owl, was added at Dickinson at 8:30 P. M. OIL SPILL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed for future oil spill cleaning of birds; if you are willing to help if this should again occur, please contact Marilyn Crane (522-6393).
